Savannah Guthrie has announced that she is set to return to the TODAY Show on April 6. During Friday’s instalment of the NBC show, viewers were informed that the anchor would resume her hosting duties next month.
The television star has been absent from the show since February 2, the day after news broke that her mother, Nancy, was abducted from her Tucson, Arizona, home. “I consider this my family,” shared Savannah. “When times are hard you want to be with your family. I want to be with my family. I don’t know if I can do it. But I would like to try. I’m not going to be the same.”
Savannah briefly returned to the show for a sit-down interview with her former co-star, Hoda Kotb, this week. She explained: “My siblings are so amazing. My brother – he spent his career in the military and worked in intelligence and [was] a fighter pilot, and is brilliant, and he saw very clearly right away what this was, and even on the phone when I called him. He knew.”
“And he said, ‘I think she’s been kidnapped for ransom.’ And I said ‘what?’ I mean it sounds so like, how dumb could I be? I just didn’t want to believe [it]. ‘Do you think [it’s] because of me?’ And he said ‘I’m sorry sweetie, but yeah, maybe.’ But I knew that.” Hoda asked: “You did?”
She continued: “I hope not. I mean we still don’t know. Honestly, we don’t know anything. We don’t know anything, so I don’t know that it’s because she’s my mom and somebody thought: ‘Oh that girl…that lady has money. We can make a quick buck.’ I mean, that would make sense but – we don’t know – but yeah, that’s probably [it], which is too much to bear.”
“To think that I brought this to her bedside. That it’s because of me, and I just say, ‘I’m so sorry mommy. I’m so sorry. I’m sorry to my sister and my brother and my kids and my nephew and Tommy, my brother-in-law. I’m just so sorry. I’m so sorry if it is me, I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry,'” as she broke down in tears.
Prior to the interview, Savannah returned to Rockefeller Plaza earlier this month, when she paid the team behind-the-scenes of TODAY an emotional visit, which was later documented on social media as they all got together to share messages of support and prayers.
NBC News revealed in a statement at the time: “Savannah Guthrie stopped by the studio this morning to be with and thank her Today colleagues. While she plans to return to the show on air, she remains focused right now supporting her family and working to help bring Nancy home.”
Hoda has stepped in for Savannah following her break from the show. “Hoda is joining us while Savannah remains with her family in Arizona. We are grateful to have you here,” Craig said on February 9, seemingly implying that she would remain as co-anchor of the show for the time being.
