Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco honor her grandma’s sweet tradition on their first anniversary

Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco are celebrating their first anniversary together. In photos shared on social media, Gomez shared a photo of a slice of her wedding cake, revealing that she and Blanco saved some so they could eat it on their first wedding anniversary. 

The photo was shared on Gomez’s Instagram and showed the white cake and frosting on a pink plate that reads “Love is Love.” “Year-old cake never tasted so good,” Gomez captioned the post. 

Blanco also shared a photo of their wedding day, writing, “1 year down… forever to go. “

The tradition dates back years ago but it was shared by Gomez’s grandma, who passed it on to Blanco and Gomez at their wedding. In an appearance on “Today with Jenna & Sheinelle.”

“Her grandma, her nana, told me this,” Blanco said of the wedding cake tradition. “When we were at the wedding, she was like, ‘You gotta save the cake.’ And I was like, ‘What do you mean save the cake?’ And she was like, ‘You gotta save the cake.’ And I was like, ‘Why?’ She was like, ‘You have to eat it.’”

“We have six slices left,” continued Blanco. “I hope you only have to eat it for the first year,” he joked. “I hope that’s the only tradition. I don’t want to be eating this thing on year six. I didn’t even wrap it correctly. It’s probably furry now.”

Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco got married last year, on September 27th. The two invited their closest friends and family to a ceremony in Santa Monica, California, with the two keeping most of the details private from the public, sharing photos on their own social media and at their own time. 

In an interview with PEOPLE, Gomez revealed that she and Blanco are still in the honeymoon phase of their relationship.  “I love it. It just feels so wonderful to have a partner that actually genuinely listens and just meets you right where you are, whatever that mood or day looks like, and that’s all I could ask for,” Gomez said. 

“I just need him, and I love him, so it’s pretty great.”
