Shakira is no stranger to breaking records. The Colombian icon can add another achievement to her name, with her free concert at the Zócalo in Mexico City gathering a record-breaking 400,000 attendees. This was the largest gathering of guests at the Zócalo, as reported by the Mexico City Tourism Secretariat.
The show marked the conclusion of her historic tour, “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran,” with her treating the show as a homecoming of sorts. In the past, Shakira has shared her affection for Mexico, with the country playing an important role in her career.
“Today, I feel a mix of excitement, nostalgia, and gratitude. Today is our last day here in Mexico, my home,” Shakira said to the audience. “There’s definitely no better reunion than that of a little she-wolf with her Mexican pack here today at the Zócalo. Forever, we are one.”
She kicked off her string of shows this year on February 21st in Tuxtla Gutiérrez. She then performed in Mérida, on February 24th, and Mexico City’s GNP Seguros Stadium on February 27th.
“This is a love and friendship story I have with Mexico that can’t be compared to anything,” Shakira said at a different point in the show. “Thank you for all the excitement, all the joy you’ve made me feel.”
The Mexico City Tourism Secretariat shared Shakira’s achievement on social media. “A new attendance record envelops the capital Zócalo, the most special stage in Mexico City,” read the post.
“Four hundred thousand hearts beat, moved and sang in unison at the magnificent concert of Shakira in the Historic Center of the capital. Long live the greatness of our city and its stages to enjoy different artistic expressions!”
Shakira’s history with the Zócalo
The Zócalo has hosted numerous famous and free performances for notorious artists, among them Rosalia, Residente, Justin Bieber, and more.
This isn’t Shakira’s first time performing at the Zócalo. Two decades ago, in 2007, she performed in the main square. She referenced the special moment when announcing the free concert on her social media.
“¡México lindo! Remember 2007 when I sang for you at the Zócalo? Today, I want to tell you that this experience will happen again,” she wrote. “You have given me so, so much, and I hope I can give back a little bit of that love you’ve given me.”
