Shia LaBeouf has once again been taken into custody in New Orleans.
Records from the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office show that the actor was arrested on Saturday and booked on an additional misdemeanor charge of simple battery.
His attorney, Sarah Chervinsky, told the Associated Press that LaBeouf voluntarily surrendered at the Orleans Parish jail after learning police had issued a new arrest warrant on Friday.
“No regular person would be required to post over $100,000 in bonds and be jailed two separate times for one misdemeanor incident,” Chervinsky said. “Just as he does not deserve preferential treatment, Mr. LaBeouf also does not deserve to be treated more harshly by the police and courts just because he is a public figure.”
The latest charge stems from an incident during Mardi Gras earlier this month. On Feb. 17, LaBeouf was arrested following a confrontation at R Bar in the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood. Police said he became hostile and allegedly got into a fight with two men, who both reported being assaulted.
Authorities claim the star of Transformers punched one bartender several times and struck another in the face. He is also accused of yelling homophobic slurs during the encounter. Details of the incident were previously reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
After the altercation, LaBeouf was taken to a nearby hospital for injuries that were not disclosed. He was later released and formally charged with two counts of simple battery.
In an interview released Saturday morning with YouTuber Andrew Callaghan, the 39-year-old reflected on the events that led to his initial arrest and spoke candidly about his recent conduct.
“It’s not nice to hurt people ever. It’s f***ing lame. People got hurt. I got to deal with that. I’mma deal with that in full. I’ll eat it all,” he said. “It was on me. It’s not on them. It’s on me. I messed up.”
When asked if he accepted responsibility, LaBeouf replied, “Definitely. Yeah. 1,000 percent.”
He continued, “My side is this — my behavior, bull***t. I got to deal with that. Does that mean I got to go to rehab again? I’m just not into it, bro. I don’t think my answers are there. If I genuinely did, I’d go. I don’t think I have a drinking problem. I think I have a different problem, and I’m going to address it.”
The actor, who also starred in Fury, said he believes he struggles with what he called a “small man complex.”
“I think it’s something that has to do with anger and ego more so than my drinking. That’s where I’m at now on my journey, and I’m trying to navigate it,” he explained.
When questioned about what sparked his anger that night, LaBeouf said, “I’ll be honest with you, big gay people are scary to me. I’m standing by myself, and three gay dudes are next to me, touching my leg, I get scared. I’m sorry if that’s homophobic. Then I’m that.”
Asked if that situation was common, he said it had only happened once. “That’s why I got arrested,” he said.
LaBeouf ended the interview by taking full accountability, saying, “I am wrong for touching anyone, ever. And that’s the end of my statement on this whole s**t.”
