Shia LaBeouf is once again making headlines for the wrong reasons, but he’s dancing away the drama. After being arrested on February 17, during Mardi Gras, the Even Stevens star took to X, formerly known as Twitter, writing, “Free me.”
His tweet came after he was charged with two counts of simple battery following an alleged altercation in the French Quarter.
Following his arrest, he immediately returned to the streets to keep on partying. A video published by WGNO-TV showed him with his Own Recognizance (or Release on Recognizance/ROR) form, meaning he was released without paying bail.
He displayed the paperwork to the camera, then put it in his mouth and did a little dance, as spectators gathered around.
According to PEOPLE, he had been in New Orleans since Thursday. On February 16, he shared a selfie on X wearing sunglasses with his neck covered in beads.
His arrest
In a statement, the New Orleans Police Department alleged that LaBeouf “was reportedly causing a disturbance and becoming increasingly aggressive” at a Royal Street business. After a staff member attempted to eject him, police say he struck one man “using his closed fists on the victim several times.” Authorities added that LaBeouf allegedly left, returned, and became “even more aggressive,” later punching the same victim again before striking a second person in the nose. “LaBeouf was again held down until police arrived,” the statement continued.
TMZ later obtained video showing the shirtless Padre Pio star receiving medical treatment from paramedics at the scene. Police say he was taken to a hospital for treatment of unknown injuries, then arrested upon release and charged with two misdemeanor counts of simple battery.
He appeared virtually in court on Tuesday afternoon, with his next court date set for March 19.
Shia’s sobriety and religious journey
LaBeouf is no stranger to fights or jail time. He’s made headlines in the past for his confrontations and has been arrested several times with charges of public intoxication, misdemeanor assault, and acting disorderly. He has also been open about sobriety and his struggles with addiction.
Things appeared to have taken a religious turn over a year ago, in January 2024, when the Capuchin Franciscans – Western America Province announced that he had received the sacrament of confirmation, formally entering the Catholic Church. “Shia LaBeouf… has embarked on a profound spiritual journey,” the group wrote at the time, describing his decision as “a testament to his sincere desire to grow in his relationship with God and live out the Gospel values.”
Photos shared by the church, which have since been deleted, showed LaBeouf kneeling at the altar at Old Mission Santa Inés Parish in Solvang, California. Needless to say, that image stands in sharp contrast to the images coming out of New Orleans.
The 39-year-old seemed to be doing better and was even at Cannes 2025 in May for his film, “The Phoenician Scheme.” He starred in two films released in 2025, and according to IMDb,, he has three upcoming, with two in pre-production. The actor shares a daughter with actress Mia Goth, with whom he’s had an on-and-off relationship since 2012.
