Shia LaBeouf will hopefully be getting back on the right path after a court ordered him to attend rehab, submit to regular drug and alcohol testing, and post a $100,000 bond after his drunken Mardi Gras bar fight in New Orleans earlier this month.
The ruling came from New Orleans Criminal District Court Judge Simone Levine. In front of a packed courtroom, she revoked his initial release and imposed stricter conditions after reviewing what she described as “quite a lot” of evidence tied to the case, per Page Six.
Video clips that circulated online appeared to show multiple moments from the incident, including one where he allegedly used homophobic slurs toward the men involved. One witness present in court later said he hopes the actor “takes some actions that are supportive of the LGBTQ community that he has harmed so severely.”
Her main concern, she reportedly said in court, was the possibility that LaBeouf could be a danger to the alleged victims and to the broader “marginalized” New Orleans community.
Along with rehab and testing, he’s been ordered to stay away from both the alleged victims and the French Quarter bar where the incident allegedly took place. His request to travel outside New Orleans was denied, according to WDSU.
The Even Stevens alum was arrested Feb. 17 and charged with two misdemeanor counts of simple battery after allegedly becoming aggressive at a Royal Street business.
Authorities claim he struck one man multiple times with closed fists, left, returned, and then escalated the altercation, later punching the same person again and hitting another in the nose before being restrained until officers arrived.
LaBeouf appeared in court alongside attorney Sarah Chervinsky wearing a white jacket, jeans, and cowboy boots, and he paid the bond immediately after proceedings.
His lawyer argued there were no illegal substances in his system. While there was a substance found in the drug test, it was potentially one that he had been prescribed. The judge, however, emphasized she was most concerned about his drinking, especially given that he returned right back to the streets to party after his arrest.
LaBeouf had initially been released without bail. Footage from that night showed him holding up his release paperwork, placing it in his mouth, and dancing in the street while still wearing Mardi Gras beads.
Reports say his ex Mia Goth – who shares a 3-year-old daughter with him – has long wanted him to seek help. Sources claim the actress believes his behavior has “been going on for years” privately and that despite their secret breakup nearly a year ago, she still cares deeply about him and wants him healthy and present in their child’s life.
The pair, who married in 2016 after meeting on the set of Nymphomaniac: Vol. I have had an on-and-off relationship for over a decade, and police were reportedly called to their Los Angeles home multiple times before their split, per TMZ.
The situation also stands in stark contrast to LaBeouf’s recent public spiritual chapter. In early 2024, the Capuchin Franciscans announced he had formally entered the Catholic Church after receiving confirmation, calling it “a profound spiritual journey” and “a testament to his sincere desire to grow in his relationship with God.”
But that doesn’t mean he’s totally strayed away from the lord. A witness told Page Six, “I was actually sitting right next to him in one of the pews, and he was doing some prayers.” “I saw him crossing himself a few times, and he seemed pretty upset at the court’s ruling.”
LaBeouf’s next court date is scheduled for March 19.
