It’s awards season, and the Academy Awards are already making history. Oscar-nominated actor Danielle Brooks and actor Lewis Pullman announced the 98th Oscars nominations on Thursday, January 22, 2026, live from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, and there are some surprises.

‘Sinners’ broke the record for most nominations for a single film

Leading the pack with nominations is Ryan Coogler’s vampire thriller Sinners. The Black talent-led film made history with 16 nominations, becoming the most-nominated film in Oscars history. The previous record of 14 was held by All About Eve, Titanic, and La La Land. Per Variety, the film earned nominations for 10 Black artists, tying the record for the most Black nominees produced by a single movie in Oscars history.

Emma Stone, 37, also broke a record, becoming the youngest woman in Oscar history to earn seven total nominations. It was previously held by Meryl Streep, going back to 1988 when she was 38. Meanwhile, Wicked: For Good earned no nominations
