Judd Nelson looked worlds away from the clean-cut college graduate he played in St. Elmo’s Fire as he stepped out in West Hollywood sporting a long grey beard.
The actor, 66, was all smiles during the rare sighting on Saturday afternoon, wearing a grey baseball cap and dark wraparound sunglasses as he stood beside his motorcycle.
For fans who remember his breakthrough performances in two of the most enduring films of the 1980s, his appearance offered a striking reminder that more than four decades have passed since he first became a household name.
Yet there was something familiar about his relaxed, layered outfit, which would not have looked entirely out of place on his rebellious Breakfast Club character, John Bender.
Judd Nelson’s rare West Hollywood appearance
Judd wore a brown T-shirt beneath an open checked shirt and an oversized black blazer, teaming the layers with camouflage cargo trousers. His hair curled out from beneath his cap, while his greying beard gave him a markedly different look from the dark-haired young actor audiences first came to know.

Although Judd makes relatively few appearances in the celebrity spotlight, he has continued acting over the years, with television credits including Suddenly Susan and Empire alongside his film work.
Judd Nelson’s breakthrough in St. Elmo’s Fire
Released in 1985, St. Elmo’s Fire helped establish Judd as one of the most recognisable faces of his generation. He played Alec opposite Ally Sheedy’s Leslie, with their troubled relationship forming part of the story of seven recent college graduates trying to find their footing in adulthood.
The ensemble also included Demi Moore, Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy, Emilio Estevez and Mare Winningham, bringing together several performers whose careers became closely associated with the decade.

While the two characters were very different, both films explored young people struggling with expectations, identity and where they belonged.

Last year, Judd revisited that extraordinary period in his career when he joined all four of his Breakfast Club co-stars for the film’s 40th anniversary.
Molly Ringwald, Emilio Estevez, Ally Sheedy and Anthony Michael Hall appeared alongside him at the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo on 12 April 2025, with Josh Horowitz moderating the reunion.
The gathering brought the five leads together for their first full-cast public reunion in four decades, making it an emotional occasion for the actors as well as the fans watching.

Judd Nelson remembers working with John Hughes
During the public panel, Judd spoke warmly about John Hughes’ willingness to involve his actors in the filmmaking process. He recalled a director who encouraged their contributions and made them feel that their ideas mattered, an experience he came to appreciate even more as his career progressed. Reflecting on that relationship, Judd said: “He liked us. I didn’t know how rare it was going to be for a director to like actors.”
