Superman just had a really good weekend. The film, directed by James Gunn, had one of the biggest debuts at the box office of 2025, soaring above its initial estimated projections.

“Superman” made $125 million in the US on its opening, with international market ticket sales coming in at $95 million. The final sales were a couple of million above the expected sales, with the film having it the year’s third biggest opening following “The Minecraft Movie,” which came in at $162 million, and the live-action remake of “Lilo & Stitch,” which reported $146 million in ticket sales.

DC executives were happy with the movie’s debut, suggesting that they will continue to invest in these characters.

“Three years ago, I hired James Gunn and Peter Safran to reimagine and unify the creative direction of DC under one leadership team,” said David Zaslav, the president and CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery.

“The DC vision is clear, the momentum is real, and I couldn’t be more excited for what’s ahead.”

For his part, James Gunn thanked Superman fans for the warm reception. “I’m incredibly grateful for your enthusiasm and kind words over the past few days,” he wrote on social media. “We’ve had a lot of ‘Super’ in Superman over the years, and I’m happy to have made a movie that focuses on the ‘man’ part of the equation — a kind person always looking out for those in need.”

“That that resonates so powerfully with so many people across the world is in itself a hopeful testament to the kindness and quality of human beings. Thank you.”

What’s next for Superman?

It’s likely that “Superman” will continue to be explored in upcoming movies, with its cast, made up of David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Maria Gabriela Faria, and more, likely thrilled to return.

For the time being, DC fans can expect two upcoming movies: “Supergirl” and “Clayface.” They’re are also different shows in development, including “Lanterns,” airing on HBO Max. All of these programs will be held in the same universe and will be a part of DC’s 10-year plan.
