Award season this year has finally kicked off with the 31st Critics Choice Awards, replacing the Golden Globes as the first major show of the season.

This year’s ceremony is being held on January 4, 2026 (a full week before the Globes), once again at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, hosted for the fourth year in a row by Chelsea Handler.

Leading this year’s nominees in the film categories is Ryan Coogler’s Sinners with a whopping 17 nods, followed by Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another with 14, and Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein and Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet with 11 apiece.

In the TV categories, following a triumphant run in the Limited Series field at the Primetime Emmys in September, it’s Adolescence in the lead with six nominations, followed by another Netflix production, Nobody Wants This, with five.

The red carpet

The first stars have descended upon the famed CCA red (or black?) carpet, including host Chelsea Handler, nominees like Owen Cooper and Elle Fanning, and many more! Check out our best dressed round-up for more!

Double trouble

If you couldn’t get enough of Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner’s matching orange leather looks for the Marty Supreme premiere, then Hacks stars Meg Stalter and Paul W. Downs’ own cosplay of the attention-grabbing red carpet moment might just be the ticket.

Chelsea Handler’s opening monologue

Chelsea kicked off the show with a hilarious rip into the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Jacob Elordi, (an absent) George Clooney, the casts of Wicked and Hamnet, before turning things more somber.

She paid a tender tribute to the “nicest man in Hollywood” Rob Reiner, who tragically died in December alongside his wife Michele Singer Reiner. Chelsea pledged to carry out the night with “decency” in his name, asking for Hollywood to imbibe his kindness as well.

The first winner

The first on-air winner of the night: Miles Caton from Sinners in the Best Young Actor/Actress category, presented by Stranger Things’ Noah Schnapp. Miles earned a loud series of laughs from the audience for shouting out his “poorly-lit audition video” for the groundbreaking film.

Hannah Walters, Stephen Graham, Erin Doherty, Emily Feller, Nina Wolarsky, Owen Cooper, Christine Tremarco and Ashley Walters, winners of the Best Limited Series Award for "Adolescence", speak onstage during the 31st Annual Critics Choice Awards at Barker Hangar on January 04, 2026 in Santa Monica, California. © Getty Images

A limited series sweep

Just like the Emmys in September, Adolescence swept the Limited Series categories, taking home Best Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Actor and Best Limited Series. Other winners so far include the likes of Sarah Snook and the cast of Sinners

Janelle James, winner of the Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series Award for "Abbott Elementary", speaks onstage during the 31st Annual Critics Choice Awards at Barker Hangar on January 04, 2026 in Santa Monica, California.

The Ladies who (make us) Laugh

Amid The Studio’s dominance in the comedy categories, two funny ladies proved to be spoilers: perennial award show favorite Jean Smart, taking home Best Actress for Hacks, delivering a scathing takedown of critics; and Janelle James, taking home her first CCA for Abbot Elementary in the Best Supporting Actress category, praising herself for “remaining kind” despite not having any incentive to do so. Honestly, quality work!

Timothée and Kylie show

After some doubt following Paul and Meg’s (hilarious) riff on their premiere orange leather looks, Timothée and Kylie made their appearance at the Critics Choice Awards in time for the film categories, albeit halfway through the night.
