The Apprentice Dan Miller has made a very surprising revelation about the popular BBC show, claiming that Lord Alan Sugar’s jokes are pre-written.
While Lord Sugar has previously said that his jokes are improvised, businessman Dan, who appears on the current season of the reality competition show, has said that Alan ticks off his jokes from a list kept on the desk.
“When he says all of his jokes he’s got a piece of paper on the desk and he crosses them off every time he says them,” Dan told The Sun.
“He’s got this magic Mont Blanc pen that he spins around on the table and he spins it on the desk and he says which team is going to go first,” said the contestant, who owns a student recruitment company.
“I mean most of his jokes I didn’t get or didn’t find very funny.
“Probably because of my Asperger’s, and on a few occasions, I had to ask him to repeat the jokes multiple times for me to understand what it was, and I think everyone in the boardroom found it quite funny,” he added.
HELLO! has reached out to the BBC for comment.
What has Lord Sugar said about his jokes?
Speaking to The Express in 2024, Lord Sugar said that his jokes were “spur of the moment”.
“Well, first of all, my jokes are on the spur of the moment, so if I knew what they were, and I knew what the scenarios were, I could perhaps explain it to them,” he said. “But they do roll off my tongue. They just come out as we’re going along.”
What to expect from The Apprentice season 20
Lord Sugar, Baroness Brady and Tim Campbell MBE are back in the boardroom for a brand new season, which sees 20 candidates go head to head for a chance to secure Lord Sugar’s £250,000 investment in their business plan, as well as his mentorship.
In episode one, Lord Sugar sent the contestants to Hong Kong on a mission to secure nine items at knock-down prices.
In a brutal double-firing at the end of the episode, Georgina Newton and Nikki Jetha were sent home.
Lord Sugar told Nikki: “Yes you put yourself forward as the project manager, very brave, but you were two hours late and you only got one item and you were the overall project manager. So it is with regret that you’re fired.”
The business mogul then said to Georgina: “I think you’re your own worst enemy. You come in here, you bring two people in and you say they shouldn’t be here. And so you leave me with nowhere to go, so Georgina, regretfully you’re fired.”
The Apprentice season 20 continues on Thursday 5th February at 9pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
