As the Nassau family enters a period of transition following Guillaume’s new role as Grand Duke, all eyes are now on Gabriel. The eldest son of Prince Louis has just reached the international age of majority—20—surrounded by the affection of his grandmother, Grand Duchess Maria Teresa, yet marked by a history that forever removed him from the line of succession.
Both Gabriel and his brother, Prince Noah, have become the new faces of Europe’s royal scene. Perfectly in sync, the two lead a generation of princes destined to navigate between two worlds: the institutional prestige of the Nassau family and the freedom of a private life removed from the obligations of the throne.
Today marks the 20th anniversary of the birth of a young man who symbolizes the most high-profile love story that once shook the Court of Luxembourg. It was March 12, 2006, when the Grand Ducal House experienced a true institutional stir with the arrival of the grandson of Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa.
The story began two years earlier, when Prince Louis met Tessy Antony during a visit to the troops in Yugoslavia. It was love at first sight between two barely 18-year-olds—an encounter that defied every convention. From that love came Gabriel, a prince who entered the world before his parents sealed their union at the altar in September 2006, marking a turning point in the traditions of the royal family.
However, this love-filled moment led the prince to renounce his rights to the succession, as well as those of any future descendants. As a result, Prince Gabriel today is unable—at any point in his life—to accede to the throne of Luxembourg.
Despite the court’s restrictions, the “forbidden love” between Louis and Tessy continued to build its own legacy. After the birth of their second son, Prince Noah, the couple came to represent a modern, unconventional partnership that lived outside the royal family’s rigid traditions.
It wasn’t until 2009 that the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess, in a gesture of affection and recognition, granted Tessy the title of Princess of Luxembourg and elevated Gabriel and Noah to the rank of Princes of Nassau. Though honorary, the recognition surrounds them with prestige while permanently keeping them outside the line of succession.
Nevertheless, even though the marriage between the two princes had seemed “magical” in an era when morganatic marriages were far from the norm, their love ultimately came to an end in 2017. That was when they made the firm decision to separate, leaving behind an example of remarkable maturity as a family—one in which both parents have managed to maintain unity for the sake of their children.
And so, far from the rigid schedules of palace life, the personality of a young man who today blows out 20 candles has taken shape.
But who is Gabriel of Luxembourg?
Despite the discretion that surrounds his day-to-day life, the grandson of the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess has gradually allowed the public to get to know him. He studies Business with a specialization in agricultural management in Dorset, England.
A year ago, he and his brother were both awarded the Legacy of Change medal at the British Houses of Parliament “for their enduring dedication to humanitarian causes and cultural diplomacy; their influence exemplifies the spirit of service.”
He’s also a food lover who enjoys cooking and likes to vacation in Ibiza. Family gatherings haven’t been the only occasions where the public has gotten a closer glimpse of him. Last October, he also reached a personal milestone when he debuted as a model, walking in the country’s Fashion Week and helping spotlight the design brand created by his mother, Tessy Antony de Nassau.
Gabriel has also become a major source of support for his mother, who once noted that her son “has a charisma he could successfully develop in modeling. I believe this is just the beginning. If Gabriel decides to pursue modeling seriously, he has all the qualities it takes,” Tessy of Luxembourg said proudly.
Now, Gabriel is reaching a new stage of life, one in which he may begin to further shape and define his own personal path.
