The real reason Brooklyn Beckham isn’t speaking to his parents

Brooklyn Beckham and his wife, Nicola Peltz Beckham, have reportedly distanced themselves from his famous parents, Victoria and David Beckham. Sources claim the estrangement stems from Brooklyn’s increasingly close bond with his in-laws—billionaire businessman Nelson Peltz, chairman of Wendy’s and a disruptive force in Disney, and his wife, Claudia.

But behind the polished public image, insiders say the family has been rocked by deep tensions. Allegedly, Nicola was left in tears on her wedding day, and the Beckhams attempted to get Brooklyn to sign over his rights to his own surname. “It’s all about Brand Beckham,” one source said.

Amid speculation that Brooklyn, 26, is being “controlled” by Nicola, a source close to the Peltz family defended her: “Nicola’s only ‘crime’ is marrying Brooklyn – she’s guilty of loving him, nothing else. Nicola told Victoria and David, ‘the only thing we wanted was your love and support.’”

In response, someone close to the Beckham camp stated, “Anyone who knows the Beckhams knows they are loving, committed, amazing parents.”

According to sources, the warning signs were already there before Brooklyn—described by friends as “highly sensitive”—married Nicola, 30. The couple got engaged in July 2020 at the Peltz family’s $100 million Palm Beach estate, just eight months after meeting.

The Peltz source claimed Victoria attempted to control the announcement: “Victoria said ‘I don’t want you posting any pictures, I want you wearing my dress and I want to announce it [the engagement] in London.”

A Beckham insider denied that, saying they merely invited the couple over for a celebratory lunch where Nicola wore a yellow silk ruffled dress from Victoria’s spring/summer 2020 line.

Victoria later offered to design Nicola’s wedding gown, but the bride ultimately walked down the aisle in Valentino Haute Couture on April 9, 2022, at her family estate. This fueled speculation of a falling-out with Victoria.

Trying to calm the narrative, Nicola told Variety, “A few months down the line, she realized that her atelier couldn’t do it, so then I had to pick another dress.”

Still, the Peltz source insisted Victoria informed Claudia—not Nicola—about her inability to make the gown. In response, Nicola, Claudia, and stylist Leslie Fremar worked with Valentino’s then-head designer, Pier Paolo Piccioli, flying to Rome three times and bringing seamstresses to the U.S. to finish the dress.

“People keep hitting on Nicola, saying she won’t wear Victoria’s dress, that she was just a spoiled rich girl,” the source said. “The Peltzes bent over backwards to try to make things work.”

Brooklyn, still navigating his career path, now runs a hot sauce brand called Cloud23. However, insiders claim he didn’t even use his last name in the business. According to a Peltz family source, “Before Brooklyn and Nicola were married, Victoria called Brooklyn and said, ‘Daddy has a very big deal, you need to sign this contract’,” which Brooklyn declined.

An industry insider explained that the contract was linked to a $269 million deal David struck in 2022, selling a majority stake in DB Ventures to Authentic Brands Group. The insider emphasized that it wasn’t intended to harm Brooklyn.

“The agreement that Brooklyn was asked to sign was to protect his rights because his parents have commercial partners who have some rights over the Beckham name, and so it ensures that the kids are carved out of that, of course,” the source said.

“It’s entirely standard and is to protect the family. Brooklyn chose not to sign the agreement, but it makes no difference, as of course no one would ever restrict his rights. Sadly, by then, Brooklyn had gotten rid of all his own advisers and was only listening to the Peltz lawyers who either didn’t understand the agreement or were being deliberately obstructive.”
