Emma Stone may be a two-time Oscar winner, but even Hollywood’s most fearless chameleons can struggle when they’re forced to keep a significant transformation under wraps. In a candid new interview with Vogue published Aug. 11, the 36-year-old star revealed that she spent months wearing wigs in public to hide a major change.
She shaved her head completely bald for her upcoming film “Bulgonia,” hitting theaters Oct. 31. “I was bummed I wasn’t going out with it,” Emma confessed. “Just straight-up bald. I think that would have been fun.”
The “La La Land” actress, who was spotted in sleek wigs at events like the New York Film Festival in October 2024, didn’t hide the fact that she loved the dramatic hair transformation. The scene in “Bulgonia” that required it sees her character kidnapped by two conspiracy theorists, played by Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis. “No better feeling in the world,” she said of the moment the clippers buzzed through her hair. “The first shower when you’ve shaved your head? Oh my god, it’s amazing.”
Still, the transformation stirred up unexpected emotions. Emma admitted she cried after remembering a deeply personal moment from her past, when her mom, Krista Stone, lost all her hair during breast cancer treatment years ago. “She actually did something brave,” Emma reflected. “I’m just shaving my head.”
Her mom’s reaction, however, was anything but worried. “My mom was like, ‘I’m so jealous. I want to shave my head again,'” Emma shared with a smile.
While her mother was on board, one famous friend needed some convincing. Jennifer Lawrence—Emma’s longtime pal—initially wasn’t thrilled about the look. She even joked that she still hadn’t fully recovered from Emma’s shaggy bangs during 2017’s “Battle of the Sexes,” when she played tennis icon Billie Jean King.
“I really didn’t want her to shave her head,” Jennifer teased. “I had already lived through the Billie Jean King haircut.” However, as soon as she saw the final result, Lawrence had to admit that her friend could pull it off. “Honestly, she looked beautiful,” she said. “She pulled it off.”
With Bulgonia set for release this Halloween, Stone’s bold decision is finally out in the open. And while fans will get to see her on-screen without a single strand, she’s still relishing the personal thrill that came with it. Her only regret is that she couldn’t stroll into every café, red carpet, and grocery store fully bald, embracing the look in real life.
As part of the “Life in Looks” segment, the “Poor Things” actress also spoke about her look for the 2011 Critics’ Choice Awards. “I told you before that I wasn’t going to say that I regret anything. I’m immediately going against that,” she said. While Stone was content with her outfit, she did have regrets about her spray tan. “I’m from Arizona, and I don’t have any pigment in my skin, so growing up, I was really obsessed with the idea of being tan,” she said. “That sort of followed me the first couple years that I was going to these types of things.”
She continued, “I thought, if you were dressing up and if you wanna look great, you should get a really, really dark spray tan. My hands … look like I’m wearing gloves because [the spray tan] it’s not on my hands. I love this dress. I felt so great in it, so great that I had to get a spray tan to really enhance how great I felt.”
