Congratulations are in order for Princess Eugenie and her husband, Jack Brooksbank, who welcomed their third child together on Monday night at a hospital in Lisbon, Portugal.

The proud mom revealed the happy news to the world via social media, sharing a photo of their baby daughter alongside a caption that read: “Jack and I are so excited to announce Baby Girl Brooksbank!! We are beyond in love with our girlie.”

Notably, Eugenie and Jack opted not to disclose their daughter’s name yet, leaving room for rampant speculation about which moniker they will choose. While the frontrunner for her first name is still a closely guarded secret, the baby’s middle name is easier to predict given her royal family history.

What will her middle name be?

Eugenie’s baby will likely be given the middle name of Elizabeth, in honour of her great-grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Elizabeth’s daughter and several of her granddaughters and great-granddaughters were bestowed with her name, in a long-held tradition for the modern royals.

Princess Anne was born Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise, and she named her daughter Zara Anne Elizabeth Tindall.

Meanwhile, Eugenie’s sister was born Princess Beatrice Elizabeth Mary, and gave the middle name to both of her daughters – Sienna Elizabeth Mapelli Mozzi, and Athena Elizabeth Rose Mapelli Mozzi.

Prince Edward’s daughter and Elizabeth’s youngest grandchild was named Lady Louise Alice Elizabeth Mary Mountbatten-Windsor.

Meanwhile, five out of seven of the late queen’s eight great-granddaughters were given her name, including Sienna, Athena, Isla Elizabeth Phillips, Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, Lena Elizabeth Tindall, and Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor.

Interestingly, Prince Harry’s daughter Lilibet was given Elizabeth’s childhood nickname, rather than her direct moniker.

As her older sister already had the middle name of Elizabeth, Eugenie was instead named after another great queen, with her full name being Princess Eugenie Victoria Helena.

Family tradition

Eugenie’s sons were named to honour family members

Eugenie and Jack’s two sons, August Philip Hawke and Ernest George Ronnie, were named in honour of family members both royal and common.

The name August is a nod to Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert, who was born Prince Franz August Karl Albert Emanuel, while Philip honours Eugenie’s grandfather, Prince Philip.

“We named August, August Philip, because grandpa has been such a huge, inspiring character in my life,” she said in the documentary Prince Philip: The Royal Family Members. The moniker of Hawke was inspired by Jack’s family member, Rev. Edward Hawke Brooksbank.

As for Ernest, he was named for his great-great-great-grandfather, King George V, who was George Frederick Ernest Albert. Jack’s father was also named George, while his third name is in honour of Eugenie’s maternal grandfather, Major Ronald Ferguson.

“When Jack and Eugenie told me, it was so moving that they put my dad in there. It was very kind, I thought. Yeah, made me cry, of course,” said Eugenie’s mother, Sarah Ferguson, on Tea Talks with the Duchess and Sarah podcast.

By not revealing the name of their baby girl, Eugenie and Jack have switched things up. While August’s name was withheld from the public for 11 days, Ernest’s name was revealed straight away in the birth announcement.
