It took a fortnight for Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank to confirm that they had named their baby girl Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank.
HELLO! understands that Eugenie, 36, and Jack, 40, wanted to take their time choosing a name for their new arrival, announcing it when they felt the time was right.
While other royals have taken a long time to announce the names of their children, others have been made in considerably shorter time. It took just one day for the then Prince Charles and Princess Diana to confirm Prince Harry’s name, while Prince William and Princess Kate confirmed Prince George and Princess Charlotte’s names in two days.
Eugenie does have form in keeping her children’s names a secret, taking nearly a week to reveal Ernest’s name and it was 11 days before she shared August’s name. Her sister, Princess Beatrice, also took 13 days to confirm the name of her first daughter, Sienna.
However, one royal blows these numbers out of the water, and it’s surprising given that the royal in question was at the time a future heir to the throne. Upon King Charles’ birth in 1948, the then Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip didn’t share his name for nearly a month.
The royal couple only confirmed that they had chosen the name of Charles one day before he was christened on 13 December 1948, meaning that the public had to wait for 29 days to learn the name of the future monarch.
Princess Eugenie’s sweet baby name
Sharing three photos of her new arrival, Eugenie wrote: “2 weeks ago today we welcomed our girl to the world. And since then we’ve had the most special, cosy and love-filled time. We are so happy to share Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank.
“Named after three people we love and admire past and present, including her Great-Grandmother who we hold close in our hearts. Her name is part of English and Portuguese history, two places we love and call home. Augie and Ernie are already the best big brothers.”
The newborn’s first name is partly inspired by Queen Adelaide, who was married to William IV, and partly by Maria Adelaide, the name of two Portuguese women, a royal and a saint.
At her wedding, Eugenie wore two diamond wheat-ear brooches as hair slides at the evening reception, which were once commissioned by William IV for Queen Adelaide.
