Six months after Savannah Guthrie’s mother Nancy disappeared without a trace, investigators have returned to the area surrounding her Arizona home amid hopes that an unexpected force of nature could uncover vital new evidence.
Federal agents were recently seen searching dense brush near the 84-year-old’s home in Tucson’s Catalina Foothills, reigniting interest in one of the year’s most baffling missing persons cases.
While authorities have not revealed why the renewed search was launched, retired Pima County Sheriff’s Department lieutenant Bob Krygier believes Arizona’s powerful monsoon season may have dramatically altered the landscape, potentially exposing clues that had previously remained hidden.
Could heavy rains reveal new evidence?
Speaking to Fox News, Krygier explained that the recent monsoon rains have transformed large parts of the desert terrain.
“About a month ago, monsoon season started here in Tucson and a lot of water has come down,” he said. “A lot of water at once, and it pushes things.”
© Getty Images“So it’s moved the environment. Rocks have been pushed away.” Arizona’s monsoon floods are capable of rapidly turning shallow washes into torrents reaching depths of up to 12 feet, carrying away vehicles, trees, rocks and other debris.
“All that water… has basically turned it into a big blender,” Krygier said, suggesting the flooding could have shifted evidence that investigators were previously unable to locate.
A fresh look at the crime scene
The former lieutenant noted there could be several explanations for the renewed search. Investigators may simply be revisiting the area with fresh eyes after six months without significant breakthroughs. Alternatively, the search could have been prompted by new information received during the investigation.
© Getty Images“I’m certain that they’ve searched those areas already,” Krygier said, adding that detectives may now be looking for something very specific.
Chilling ransom notes
The renewed activity comes just days after investigators released two disturbing ransom notes sent to the Guthrie family shortly after Nancy disappeared on February 1. The first demanded a $4 million Bitcoin ransom, while a second claimed Nancy had died shortly after being abducted.
“We did not fully grasp the seriousness of her physical condition,” the second note stated before adding: “She perished shortly after she was taken… She is buried in nature now.”
© Getty ImagesInvestigators believe the messages may contain distinctive phrases or writing patterns that someone could recognise. “There are a number of pieces of information in these notes that just might jar someone to say, ‘You know, I’ve heard that,'” Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said when releasing the letters.
One note also referenced details inside Nancy’s home, including a broken backyard floodlight and a white smartwatch found on her bedroom floor, leading investigators to believe the writer may have had first-hand knowledge of the property.
Investigation remains active
Authorities stress the investigation remains very much ongoing. Detectives continue reviewing tens of thousands of tips, surveillance videos and forensic leads collected since Nancy’s disappearance. “We’re still here. We are not going away,” Sheriff Nanos said. “We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us.”
Investigators also recently revealed that two videos recovered from Nancy’s Ring doorbell camera may have been recorded on different days. Previously released surveillance footage showed a masked individual apparently tampering with the home’s security camera and blocking its view with a plant shortly before Nancy vanished. Authorities have described the person as a man approximately 5ft 9in tall.
Questions remain unanswered
Nancy’s disappearance shocked her family after she was reported missing from her home six months ago. Investigators later confirmed blood found on the front porch belonged to Nancy, although reports suggested it was not immediately treated as evidence because authorities initially believed it may have resulted from a minor injury.
Family members also reportedly found the back door propped open when searching the property. Despite the release of the ransom notes, investigators have not confirmed whether Nancy is alive or dead.
Her family continues to hope for answers and is offering a reward of up to $1 million for information leading to her recovery. As investigators once again comb the rugged Arizona landscape, officials hope the changing terrain may finally reveal the breakthrough that has so far remained frustratingly out of reach.
