The Wire‘s Bobby J Brown has died at 62. Per TMZ, Bobby tragically died in a fire after entering a barn to jump-start a vehicle on Tuesday, February 24. In recent years, two other of Bobby’s co-stars, Isaiah Whitlock Jr. and James Ransone, have died as well.

“Bobby J. Brown was a man of immense talent and incredible discipline,” the former professional boxer’s agent, Albert Bramante, told HELLO!. “He was a true professional and an even better human being. We are heartbroken by this loss and ask that the family’s privacy be respected at this time.”

Bobby was best known for portraying Officer Bobby Brown on HBO’s acclaimed drama, The Wire. According to the Maryland Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, Bobby died from diffuse thermal injury and smoke inhalation.

The actor’s family members explained that shortly after Bobby entered the barn, a fire broke out. He called a relative for a fire extinguisher, but by the time any help arrived, he and the barn were already engulfed in flames. It’s reported that his wife suffered severe burns trying to rescue him.

In a conversation with People, Bobby’s daughter Reina called her father’s passing “a huge loss.” She continued, explaining where she was when she heard the news: “I was sound asleep. I had gone to bed about two hours before. My little sister [was] freaking out, saying that Dad’s gone and that he got caught up in a barn fire, and I’m like, ‘What do you mean?'”

Reina went on, barefoot because she “wanted to make sure I was really awake.” Heartbreakingly, the actor’s daughter said: “I couldn’t believe it. I was like, this isn’t real. And I still don’t even feel like it’s real.”

The Wire‘s recent losses

The HBO crime drama series is widely considered one of the best shows to ever be on television. Loosely based on the work from former police reporter David Simon, who created and wrote the show, The Wire ran from June 2002 to March 2008.

It followed both drug dealers and law enforcement in Baltimore, Maryland and was the launching pad for Hollywood A-lister, Idris Elba. Its cast has suffered several losses in the past few years, with three stars passing away in the last three months.

James Ransone, who appeared as Ziggy Sobotka, died on December 19, 2025 via suicide. The 46-year-old actor is survived by his wife, Jamie McPhee and their two children.

11 days later, Isaiah Whitlock Jr., who starred as the corrupt state senator Clay Davis on The Wire, died at 71 after battling a short illness. The actor also starred in Veep, Your Honor, and The Residence. He was a longtime collaborator with Spike Lee and appeared in six of the Oscar-winning filmmaker’s movies.

These weren’t the only losses The Wire family suffered. In 2023, Lance Reddick, who portrayed Lt. Cedric Daniels on the show, passed away at 60 from coronary artery disease and atherosclerotic heart disease.

Just two years earlier, in 2021, Michael K. Williams, who was best known for starring as Omar Little in The Wire, died at 54 from an apparent drug overdose.
