After being involved in a rollover crash in Jupiter Island, Florida on March 27, Tiger Woods was taken into custody on the charge of a DUI, and for refusing to take a urine test.
While the pro golfer, 50, successfully completed the breathalyzer, he allegedly refused further interrogation. However, when presented in court on March 31, the athlete pleaded not guilty to the DUI charge.
Soon after, he took to social media to release a statement, citing a need to take some time away from the public eye and his sport, “stepping away” to heal and work on himself, which was later confirmed by his canceled upcoming appearances.
The potential for “enhanced penalties”
HELLO! spoke with Florida-based transportation attorney Doug Burnetti about the potential legal ramifications of his case, and he noted that this being his second DUI charge could prove to be a severe factor when it comes to meting out a sentence or fine.
“A judge will evaluate the full range of aggravating factors, including the severity of the crash, the allegations of impairment despite no alcohol being detected, and the fact that this is Tiger Woods’ second DUI-related case,” he shared with us.
“Those factors could weigh heavily in sentencing, potentially resulting in enhanced penalties such as an extended license suspension, fines, and additional court-imposed conditions. Tiger could easily be looking at a two-year suspension of his driver’s license and a monetary fine.”
Latest discoveries
On March 31, it was shared through an affidavit by the Martin County Sheriff’s Department that two white pills were found in Tiger’s pocket, later identified as hydrocodone, an opioid analgesic that is often used for chronic pain.
When the golfer was asked if he was taking any medication, he responded: “I take a few,” likely referencing the pain stemming from his continued health issues, most recently his seventh back surgery back in October of 2025.
Tiger breaks his silence
Later on March 31, Tiger took to X to speak out for the first time since the arrest, sharing: “I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today. I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health.”
“This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery,” he continued. “I’m committed to taking the time needed to return in a healthier, stronger, and more focused place, both personally and professionally. I appreciate your understanding and support, and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones and myself at this time.”
The PGA Tour then followed up with a statement that read: “Tiger Woods is a legend of our sport whose impact extends far beyond his achievements on the course. But above all else, Tiger is a person, and our focus is on his health and well‑being. Tiger continues to have our full support as he takes this important step.”
CEO Brian Rolapp shared in his own personal statement: Tiger Woods is one of the most influential figures the sports world has ever known. Over the last year, I have come to deeply appreciate Tiger not only for his impact on the game, but for his friendship and the perspective he has shared with me as I joined the golf industry. My thoughts are with him and his family as he takes this step, for which he has my full respect and support.”
