The Heartbreakers reunited for their first formal performance as a whole group at the Americana Music Awards on Wednesday night, almost 10 years after the death of their frontman, Tom Petty.

Country star Chris Stapleton took to the stage in Tom’s stead to sing a medley of songs with the original members of the band, including Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Stan Lynch and Ron Blair, who have not played together in more than 20 years.

The band played “Breakdown” and “American Girl” for the audience before two other members of the Heartbreakers, Steve Ferrone and Scott Thurston, joined to perform “You Wreck Me”.

Mike, 76, Benmont, 73, Stan, 71 and Ron, 78, looked incredibly youthful as they took to the stage and rocked out on their instruments in honor of their late friend Tom.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers received the Lifetime Achievement Award on Wednesday night, and Mike took a moment to pay tribute to Tom in his speech.

“It’s really emotional and sweet to be here. Tom, I’m gonna miss rocking around with you,” he said. Tom’s daughter, Adria Petty, also spoke at the event about her dad’s legacy in the music industry.

The rocker died of an accidental overdose in October 2017, after taking medication to ease the pain of a hip fracture. He made 13 albums with the Heartbreakers, cementing them as one of the most influential bands in the US.

Just a week before Tom’s untimely death, he performed with the Heartbreakers at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles to celebrate their 40th anniversary. “We love you dearly. I want to thank you for 40 years of a really great time,” Tom told the crowd. “Thank you so much. God bless you. Goodnight!”

In the years since Tom’s death, the Heartbreakers have performed informally and have only had partial reunions, making Wednesday night’s appearance all the more meaningful.

The last time that the original lineup played together was back in 2002 at their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. Mike previously spoke about the thought of replacing Tom as the frontman and continuing to perform with the Heartbreakers in an interview with Rolling Stone.

“Nobody can fill those shoes. I can’t fill them, and I don’t know anybody else that I would want to fill them,” he said. The musician later shared with Guitarist magazine that he still hadn’t recovered from Tom’s death eight years on. “Losing Tom was huge – and is still huge for me. It’s like I lost my right arm,” Mike explained.

“It took part of my ability to be who I was with him, to some extent. But making music is too much a part of my being to stop,” he continued. “I felt depressed and sad carrying on without him, but I just did the best I could.” 2026 marks the 50th anniversary of the formation of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
