The world is remembering Robert Redford, a cinematic titan, a trailblazing activist, and a beloved figure across generations, following his death at age 89 on September 16.

The Oscar-winning actor and director passed away peacefully at his home in the mountains of Utah, at Sundance, “the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved,” according to his longtime representative Cindi Berger. “He will be missed greatly. The family requests privacy.”

From legends of the screen to former presidents, tributes have come pouring in, a reflection of Redford’s immense cultural and political reach.

Jane Fonda:

For actress and activist Jane Fonda, the loss hit especially hard. Fonda and Redford shared the screen in several memorable films over the decades, from 1966’s The Chase to Barefoot in the Park (1967), The Electric Horseman (1979), and their 2017 Netflix drama Our Souls at Night.

The two remained close throughout their careers, their collaborations spanning over 50 years. “It hit me hard this morning when I read that Bob was gone. I can’t stop crying,” Fonda said in a statement. “He meant a lot to me and was a beautiful person in every way. He stood for an America we have to keep fighting for.”

Meryl Streep:

Meryl Streep, who starred with Redford in the sweeping 1985 epic Out of Africa, kept her tribute short but deeply moving: “One of the lions has passed. Rest in peace, my lovely friend.”

Morgan Freeman:

Morgan Freeman also reflected on Redford’s impact. The two shared the screen in Brubaker (1980) and An Unfinished Life (2005). “Working with Robert Redford on Brubaker in 1980, we instantly became friends,” Freeman said. “Working with him again in An Unfinished Life was a dream come true. Rest peacefully, my friend.”

Donald Trump:

Even former President Donald Trump, despite a history of political differences with the liberal-leaning actor, paid tribute to Redford. Speaking to reporters outside the White House, Trump said he was surprised by the news of Redford’s passing in his sleep: “That’s a good way to go, I guess.”

“Robert Redford was great. He had years where there was no one better … He made seven or eight great movies. … There was a period of time where he was the hottest,” Trump added.
