What happened to the Man About the House cast? Where the stars of ’70s sitcom ended up

Richard was the main star of Man About the House, as Robin, a student chef who moves into a flat with two women, although on the basis of keeping the relationship purely platonic. Meanwhile, Robin’s Nest sees Robin attempting to propose to his girlfriend, Vicky.

Richard made his acting debut in 1952, when he appeared in The Yellow Balloon, aged just eight. After his stint on the popular sitcoms, the star also appeared in the likes of Dick Turpin, Me and My Girl and Trouble in Mind. However, despite the fame, he decided to step back from the limelight in 1996.

The star was married twice, firstly to model Diana Terry and secondly to Christine Smart, but more marriages ended in divorce. He also dated two of his co-stars, including Man About the House’s Sally Thomsett and Robin’s Nest’s Tessa Wyatt, with the pair welcoming their son, James.

Richard died at the age of 82 on 4 September 2026.

Paula played Chrissy Plummer in the sitcom, one of the women who Robin moves in with. The actress, now 76, originally made her name in shows like The Lovers and The Liver Birds.

Paula has also appeared in Miss Jones and Son, The Queen’s Nose, The Smoking Room and Coronation Street, where she played Elaine Jones between 2020 and 2023. The star is still acting, and was on-screen earlier this year in The Fortune, where she played Linda Blakefield.

In 1970, she married fellow actor Derek Seaton, but he tragically died at the age of 35 in 1979 from a brain haemorrhage. Since 1991, Paula has been married to Nelson “Skip” Riddle.

Sally first rose to fame as Phyllis Waterbury in The Railway Children, also appearing in films such as Straw Dogs and Baxter!. In Man About the House, she played Jo, also appearing in the film adaptation of the series, in what was her final movie role.

Sally, now 76, has stepped back from the public eye, with her last credit coming from 2023, when she appeared in a show marking the 50th anniversary of Man About the House. Before then, her final credit was in Wodehouse Playhouse, which was broadcast in 1978.

Sally is currently in a long-term relationship with Paul Agnew, with the pair welcoming a daughter in 1996.

Yootha played Mildred Roper, the long-suffering wife of the lead characters’ landlord, she also reprised the role for one of the show’s spin-offs, George & Mildred.

The actress was incredibly established when she took on the role, having made her theatre debut in the 1940s. Her screen debut came in 1962, when she played Mrs. Trench in an episode of Brothers in Law, making her silver screen debut the following year in Sparrows Can’t Sing.

Tragically, during her life, Yootha battled with alcoholism, which partially stemmed from the public recognition that she received from playing Mildred in the shows. She died of liver failure at the age of 53 on 24 August 1980. An inquest found that her liver was twice its normal size and that she had been drinking half a bottle of brandy every day for 10 years.

Brian first came to public prominence when he played short-tempered landlord George Roper in the show and its subsequent follow-up. He also had a major role as Alvin Smedley in Last of the Summer Wine, playing the role from 2003 until the show’s conclusion in 2010.

The actor also has credits in The Booze Cruise franchise, Wizadora, Pond Life, The Catherine Tate Show and The Cafe.

Brian and his first wife, Carol Gibson, welcomed two children and fostered many others before they split. The actor subsequently married Hi-de-Hi! star Linda Regan, and they remained together until Brian died at the age of 92 on 2 February 2025.
