Children in the 1960s fell in love with The Flintstones, an animated sitcom set in a romanticised Stone Age town named Bedrock. And 30 years later, the series made it to the big-screen with a live-action cast.

Fan favourite characters like Fred and Wilma Flintstone and Barney and Betty Rubble were brought to life by John Goodman, Elizabeth Perkins, Rick Moranis and Rosie O’Donnell respectively.

However, upon its release, the film was critically panned by critics, with a heavy focus on its script. Even worse for the movie, it was named in several lists as one of the worst films of the year. Ouch!

Despite this, the film was a major success with audiences, topping the box office for two weeks before Speed came out, while setting a then-record for largest Memorial Day weekend opening, amazingly surpassing Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

It’s been 32 years since the film was shown on the big screen, but what happened to its biggest stars? Here’s all you need to know…

John played the beloved cartoon character

John Goodman

John played everybody’s favourite Bedrock inhabitant, taking on the leading role of Fred Flintstone in the film. John was originally supposed to play the character in the film’s 2000 sequel, but begged director Steven Spielberg to not star in another.

Although the move reportedly soured John’s relationship with the legendary director, it didn’t majorly impact the star’s career. He has since starred in the likes of The Big Lebowski, while also providing the voices of Pacha and Sulley in the Disney/Pixar movies The Emperor’s New Groove and Monsters, Inc.

John’s career has also seen him star in The Artist, Flight, The Conners, The Righteous Gemstones and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, the latter of which earned him an Emmy Award.

Since the late 2000s, John has been on a weight transformation, losing 90kg after overhauling his fitness and diet, including walking 10,000 steps in a day and cutting alcohol out of his life.

Rick stepped away from Hollywood

Rick Moranis

Rick, who played Barney Rubble, was one of the biggest stars in the 1980s, starring in the Ghostbusters franchise, Little Shop of Horrors, Spaceballs and the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids movies.

However, by the time The Flintstones was released, Rick was already winding down his Hollywood career due to the death of his wife, Ann Belsky in 1991. Rick started focusing on being a single dad to the couple’s two children, appearing in only a few films since the 1994 hit. He is due to make his return to the big screen next year when he reprises the role of Dark Helmet in Spaceballs: The New One.

The actress brought Wilma to life

Elizabeth Perkins

Elizabeth portrayed the beautiful Wilma Flintstone in the family film, with 1994 proving to be a major year for the actress, given she would star in Miracle on 34th Street the same year. She has since starred in Moonlight and Valentino, The Ring Two and Weeds, the latter of which earned her three Emmy nominations and a further two Golden Globe nominations.

In 2005, the actress was diagnosed with Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults, a slow-developing form of type 1 diabetes. Speaking to Woman’s World about the difficulty in getting a diagnosis, she explained that doctors dismissed her symptoms and despite having six or seven blood tests, during which she was never tested for glucose, which would have immediately confirmed the condition.

The actress has now left the US

Rosie O’Donnell

Rosie played Betty Rubble in The Flintstones, and while after the film, she continued to have an acting career, she mainly pivoted into hosting her own talk show, The Rosie O’Donnell Show, which ran between 1996 and 2002. She has also hosted shows like The Rosie Show and The View.

An outspoken critic of US President Donald Trump, following his 2025 inauguration, she left the United States for Ireland. Like her co-star, John Goodman, Rosie has also been on a weight transformation, dropping 27kg by taking GLP-1 medication.

Kyle played the villainous Cliff Vandercave in the family flick, and he is since known for his movie roles in Showgirls and the Inside Out films. Kyle has also had an incredible TV career, with major roles in the likes of How I Met Your Mother, Sex and the City, Desperate Housewives and Fallout.

The star is a social media fan favourite, with his accounts often referencing viral moments and other pop culture references. It’s not just acting that Kyle is known for, with the actor also being the founder of the Pursued by Bear wine brand.

Kyle wasn’t the only villain in the film, with Halle playing Miss Sharon Stone, the secretary who was in on the embezzlement scheme. Halle has become an A-list actress since the film’s release with roles in Die Another Day, the X-Men films and Monster’s Ball, which won her an Oscar.

Reflecting on the film for its 30th anniversary in 2024, Halle shared a reel where she said: “Being a Black woman in Bedrock seemed like a little thing, but you know, The Flintstones was the fabric of our culture. I knew that this was a big step forward for Black people. Black women especially. Yes, I remember all of that.

“While it was silly, and it was over the top and campy, I knew then how important this little part in this big movie actually would be.”

The film was Elizabeth’s final film role

Elizabeth Taylor

Elizabeth at one point was the one of the most famous leading ladies of Hollywood, with some of the biggest parts in the world, while finding romance with the leading men of the time. The actress played Pearl Slaghoople in what was her final theatrical release, although she made brief appearances in The Nanny, Can’t Hurry Love, God, the Devil, and Bob and These Old Broads.

Sadly, Elizabeth’s health started declining towards the end of her career and in 2004, she was diagnosed with congestive heart failure, dying from the illness on 23 March 2011 at the age of 79.
