The founder of ASOS has died at the age of 58 after falling from a balcony in Pattaya, Thailand.
Quentin Griffiths was found dead on 9 February, after falling from his 17th-floor apartment in the coastal city. The entrepreneur co-founded Asos in 2000 and served as its marketing director until 2005, when he left to pursue other interests.
A police investigator told the BBC that Quentin was by himself, his room was locked from the inside, and there was no trace of any break-ins at the time of the death. An autopsy did not reveal any evidence of foul play.
Who was Quentin Griffiths?
As well as the co-founder of ASOS, Quentin Griffiths was a father to five children. He shared three children with his first wife. Following his divorce, he moved from the UK to Thailand, where he found love again with his second wife, and they welcomed a son and a daughter.
What was his net worth?
While it’s hard to find an exact figure, Quentin appears to have been a multi-millionaire. According to This Is Money, after launching ASOS in 2000, its share value tripled, and Quentin eventually sold £15 million of his shares in the company in 2010.
His net worth largely came from his time at ASOS, as well as other shares and business investments. Quentin filed a lawsuit against BDO, his accounting firm, saying they cost him £4million in tax on the sales of more than £10million of shares in Asos and Achica, an online retailer he also co-founded, according to reports.
Ongoing legal disputes
As well as the aforementioned lawsuit, Quentin had ongoing legal proceedings with his ex-wife after she accused him of taking 500,000 pounds from a company they ran together. She claimed he forged documents to sell land and shares without her knowledge. Griffiths denied these claims. He was arrested and questioned last year but was later released. Authorities said the investigation was still ongoing at the time of his death.
