Dolly Parton spent decades sharing her music, humor, and unmistakable personality with millions of fans, but when it came to one of the most difficult chapters of her life, the country music legend made a very different choice.

Following Parton’s death at age 80 on August 25, 2026, her niece Jada Star is sharing new insight into why the “Jolene” singer did not publicly disclose her cancer diagnosis.

Dolly Parton kept her cancer battle private

According to Star, the decision reflected something her family knew well about Parton: She did not want the people around her worrying about her. “She never wanted to worry anybody,” Star told Extra in an interview released September 1. “You know, we kind of kept all that stuff real private.”

Parton’s representatives confirmed after her death that she had faced a “brief battle with cancer.” The specific type of cancer has not been publicly disclosed.

Why Dolly Parton Kept Her Cancer Diagnosis Private

Star’s comments help explain why Parton’s death came as such a profound shock to fans. While the singer had previously acknowledged experiencing health problems, the public did not know she was battling cancer.

Parton had not completely hidden the fact that she was experiencing health problems.

Her family knew more about her condition, but they respected her desire to keep the situation out of the spotlight. Even Star described Parton’s death as a shock. “It’s been really difficult and very surreal,” she said while discussing how the family was coping.

Parton’s cousin and longtime musical collaborator Richie Owens has offered a similar explanation of her approach to privacy. Speaking about her health struggles after her death, Owens said Parton wanted the people around her to remain positive. “She’s always kept things private because she wanted to keep everybody being positive around her,” Owens said, adding that her attitude was essentially, “Don’t worry about me, I’m gonna be fine.”

Dolly Parton Had Previously Addressed Health Concerns

Parton had not completely hidden the fact that she was experiencing health problems. In the months before her death, she had stepped back from some public appearances and discussed medical issues without revealing the full extent of what she was facing.

In 2025, Parton told fans that a kidney stone had caused complications, including an infection. She also postponed a series of planned Las Vegas performances while explaining that she needed to undergo medical procedures.

She continued to reassure fans that she was not retiring.

In March 2026, during an appearance connected to Dollywood’s anniversary, Parton acknowledged that she had experienced several health issues and had become physically and emotionally exhausted while grieving the death of her husband, Carl Dean. Dean died in March 2025 after nearly six decades of marriage to Parton.

Jada Star Says the Family’s Grief Has Been ‘Bittersweet’

For Star, losing her aunt has meant processing an intensely personal loss while simultaneously watching millions of people mourn the same woman.

She described the experience as “bittersweet,” explaining that seeing the enormous response to Parton’s death has helped the family understand just how deeply she affected people around the world. “All of these tributes have helped so much to help us all through it,” Star said.

The tributes have stretched far beyond Nashville. Fans gathered to remember Parton, fellow entertainers shared memories of working with her, and the Grand Ole Opry dedicated its August 29 show to the longtime member.

Parton first appeared at the Grand Ole Opry when she was just 13 years old and became an official member in 1969. Over her career, she performed there more than 100 times.

Star, a singer-songwriter herself, participated in the Grand Ole Opry tribute just days after her aunt’s death. She performed “The Orchard,” a song connected to Parton’s 2024 family project Smoky Mountain DNA: Family, Faith and Fables.

Taking the stage during such an emotional moment was understandably difficult, but Star said she thought about advice her aunt had repeatedly given her. “Why are you worried about what other people think?” Parton would ask her.

Star carried that message onto the Opry stage. She also said she plans to continue applying the lessons Parton taught her to her own work and life. “Everything she taught me, I’ll use in everything I do,” Star said.

What Dolly Parton Would Want Her Family to Do Next

Star believes her aunt would not want her family to remain consumed by grief. “I can’t remember a life without her in it,” she admitted. But she also knows exactly how Parton would probably respond to the tears.

According to Star, her aunt would tell everyone to “start trying to get back to work and love each other real hard.”

Dolly Parton’s Final Goodbye Was Private, Too

The privacy surrounding Parton’s illness continued after her death. Her family held an intimate burial attended by immediate relatives, reflecting her preference for keeping deeply personal moments within the family.

The private farewell

Owens said Parton wanted the arrangements to remain “very, very private.” He also explained that instead of people spending money on funeral flowers, Parton would have preferred donations to her Imagination Library.
