Season 4 of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives is finally here, and it reveals a separation — Mikayla Matthews and her husband, Jace Terry, decided to go their separate ways. Although Mikayla explained the multitude of reasons behind their split, fans knew it primarily involved their intimacy struggles.
“We both agreed to do a separation,” she said during a confessional in season 4, episode 9. Last season, Mikayla, 25, and Jace, 30, went to couples therapy in hopes of mending their relationship, but they had already been growing apart.

Why Did Mikayla & Jace Break Up?
During a confessional from season 4, episode 9, Mikayla explained that her chronic illness, while being postpartum, “has held [her] back from saying ‘yes’ to a lot of opportunities.”
“It’s definitely discouraging and frustrating, and it kind of holds me back in other places in my life, like my marriage with Jace,” she pointed out. “There’s part of me that is definitely scared to lose him because I feel like our marriage is so good outside of the sexual intimacy part of it, which is ironic because that’s his No. 1 need and that’s my No. 1 wound.”
The “wound” Mikayla has referred to her past sexual abuse, which became a central storyline to the show.
“I feel like I’m working on so many different things outside of just sex, and I know that obviously he can’t just be like, ‘OK, well we can go without that.’ We both get to a point where we feel really helpless about it,” Mikayla explained to her co-star Mayci Neeley in a separate scene.
The most heartbreaking scene for fans to watch was when Mikayla packed up her belongings from her and Jace’s shared home. At one point, he told her, “At home, you feel like you can’t focus on your skin and your health because I’m also here.”
“I think it’s hard anytime you bring up the stuff with the sex and the intimacy,” Mikayla admitted to Jace. “I feel it’s hard on me because again, my nervous system is already in fight or flight, and I’m already maxed out. My bucket is full.”
Nevertheless, Mikayla pointed out, “I don’t think it’s like with the intention of being separated forever. I think we’re obviously still going to see each other every single day. I’m not trying to go even a day away from the kids anyway.”
