Why Dolly Parton’s funeral was so private and not a large, star-studded burial

Dolly Parton spent decades living one of the most public lives in country music, but when it came to her final goodbye, the legendary singer wanted something remarkably different.

Parton’s cousin and longtime musical collaborator Richie Owens is sharing new details about the country icon’s private burial, explaining why her family did not hold the large, star-studded funeral many fans might have expected.

Owens also opened up about the last time he saw Parton alive, revealing that their final in-person meeting centered on music.

Parton died on Aug. 25, 2026, at age 80 following what her representatives described as a “brief battle with cancer.” The singer died at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville surrounded by loved ones.

Just days later, her family gathered privately to lay her to rest beside her husband, Carl Dean, who died in March 2025.

Why Dolly Parton Didn’t Want a Big Funeral

During a Sept. 3 appearance on NBC’s “Today,” Owens explained that describing Parton’s farewell as a traditional funeral did not quite capture what the family intended. “She wanted to keep it very quiet,” Owens said.

According to Owens, Parton wanted a small burial beside Dean rather than an elaborate public ceremony. Only a few family members attended, and Owens emphasized that there was no negative reason behind the limited guest list. “It’s just that’s what she wanted,” he explained, adding that Parton wanted the occasion kept “very, very private.”

The choice feels particularly fitting considering the contrast between Parton’s public image and her closely guarded personal life. Although millions of fans knew her music, humor and unmistakable rhinestone-covered style, she maintained significant boundaries around her marriage, health and family.

Even Carl Dean, her husband of nearly six decades, famously stayed largely outside the spotlight.

There was another reason Parton apparently had little interest in an elaborate funeral. She would rather see money spent helping others.

Owens said Parton had repeatedly expressed the view that instead of spending $50 on funeral flowers, people could give that money to her Imagination Library. “She really cared about her charities,” Owens said.

Founded in 1995, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library grew from a literacy program serving children in her native East Tennessee into an international initiative distributing books to young children. Her philanthropy also extended into medical research and numerous causes connected to education and her Appalachian roots.

For Parton, Owens suggested, a donation capable of doing some good carried more meaning than an expensive floral arrangement.

Owens explained that his father had given Parton a small Martin guitar in 1958, when she was still young. The original instrument was later lost in a fire, but Owens eventually helped track down the same model.

That search ultimately led to the Martin Guitar Company. Owens said the company helped document the instrument and also created another Martin for Parton featuring a butterfly. “That was the last time … that I was with her,” Owens recalled of presenting the guitars to his cousin.

Dolly Parton Was Still Writing Songs

Owens described his cousin as an unstoppable worker whose creativity seemingly never switched off. “That lady was a workaholic. She was relentless,” he said.

Additional reporting on Owens’ interview revealed that Parton began putting the guitar to use almost immediately. After receiving it, she would reportedly call Owens and tell him about the new songs she had written with it. In one recollection, Owens said she told him she had written another four songs in a single week.

Dolly Parton Kept Her Cancer Battle Private

Owens also revealed that he did not fully understand the seriousness of Parton’s health problems before her death. “She always kept things private,” he said, explaining that Parton wanted the people around her to remain positive.

Parton had publicly acknowledged health challenges before her death, but the extent of her condition was not widely known. She was admitted to Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center on Aug. 21 and died four days later. Her representatives subsequently confirmed that she had faced a brief battle with cancer, although the specific type was not disclosed.

Owens’ account suggests that some members of her extended family were also unaware of how serious her condition had become.

“Dolly was always Dolly,” Owens said, recalling her humor and giving personality. “The lady was just magic,” Owens remembered.
