Why Rock Villa Is the ultimate luxury Caribbean hideaway on the tiny island of Bequia

While sprawling resorts and cutting-edge design often define our idea of luxury, there’s a quieter kind of indulgence to be found on smaller, lesser known islands – places that host intimate boutique hotels and those ‘if you know, you know’ corners of the world. They don’t appear flash on the surface, instead revealing their magic slowly as you savour every detail.

Tucked away on the tiny Caribbean island of Bequia in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, you’ll find exactly that at Rock Villa. The latest venture from the Mortstedt family, building on the legacy of their five-star Bequia Beach Hotel, the adults-only property combines the intimacy of a private residence with the elegance of a boutique retreat.

Boasting eight suites, it can be reserved exclusively as a full villa, or experienced by booking an individual room and sharing the space with fellow travellers. The villa is fully staffed, and Asha and Aiofe were very attentive, taking wonderful care of us throughout our stay. Their genuine hospitality made the experience feel more intimate and personal, offering a level of care and attention you simply wouldn’t find at a larger resort.

The space

Carved into the rock face of the majestic Grenadine Hills, the property unfolds into a striking open-plan living space, complete with a fully equipped kitchen thoughtfully stocked with treats throughout the day. But it’s the views that truly stole my attention. From the infinity pool, you can recline beneath the Caribbean sun and take in sweeping panoramas across the southern Grenadines, with the celebrity-favoured island of Mustique visible on the horizon.

The villa balances modernity and an island-inspired palette, something I particularly appreciated as it never once felt disconnected from its surroundings. Subtle nods to the local landscape are woven seamlessly throughout the space, with Italian marble tables sitting beside soft ivory sofas, while pale wood accents stretch across the ceilings – understated details that hint at the family’s Swedish heritage.

Light and airy throughout, the villa is bathed in natural sunshine, with doors left open to invite in the breeze and uninterrupted views of the sun loungers against the horizon. There’s an old-school glamour to the interiors too, with classic Hollywood posters lining the walls, complemented by vintage Caribbean touches and bamboo-inspired light shades that root the design firmly in its setting.

The movie theme made sense when I discovered the villa has its own cinema room complete with sumptuous velvet armchairs. You’ll also find a fully equipped gym, and as someone who has never been fond of enduring miles on a treadmill, I was delighted to discover it even had its own Reformer Pilates bed.

The suite

Bathed in soft grey tones, with dark wood wardrobes and a playful striped sofa, my room felt chic with no compromise on space. My private terrace looked out over the water, and as someone who lives in the city, there’s nothing quite like drifting off to the sound of waves – far more soothing than any track on my Calm app back in the London.

But the true highlight was the spacious en-suite bathroom, awash in creamy ivory hues. With large his-and-hers sinks, illuminated mirrors that doubled as the perfect glam station, an open shower, and a generous bathtub, it was even decked out with Elemis products.

The food

At Rock Villa, you get the best of both worlds: the fully catered service of a luxury hotel paired with the privacy and intimacy of a villa stay. The kitchen is stocked with local treats, and a chef is available throughout the day and evening, so the menu feels very personalised. The most indulgent homemade cookies and brownies were always within reach, and when I asked for more, they would magically appear on the kitchen countertop.

Breakfast was served on the terrace with an à la carte menu consisting of yogurt bowls, fresh fruit platters, pastries, and cooked eggs. One evening, I indulged in a private chef dinner at the villa, an experience available to guests for an additional cost, and absolutely worth it.

The six-course set menu was inspired by local flavours, beginning with a creamy, sweet roasted pumpkin and coconut velouté, followed by pan-seared mahi-mahi paired with breadfruit – a dish I might not normally choose, but thoroughly enjoyed. For dessert, my sweet tooth was satisfied with a decadent dark chocolate and local rum tart. The villa also has its own private bar, so I was never without an ice-cold margarita to sip while watching the sunsets each evening.

Guests can also take a short stroll down to Bequia Beach Hotel and enjoy its restaurants. I loved the vibe at Bagatelle, where live music fills the space once a week, and I enjoyed a buffet of fresh jerk chicken, salads, and fish, all while listening to soulful renditions of classics like Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay.

Blue Tropic, the Italian restaurant on property, offers a more intimate dining experience with a charming, old-school atmosphere. The star dish on the menu is the ravioli, followed by a classic margherita pizza, and finished with a rich coconut ice cream.

For lunch, The Sand Bar is just a few minutes’ walk from the villa, perched right on the white-sand beach. Though it’s rumoured to attract a few celebrity sightings, George Clooney among them, it retains its authentic Caribbean charm. I loved how reggae music played all day, and the white fish tacos were my go-to dish.

The extras

The villa provides chauffeur-driven open-roof cars for island transfers, turning every journey into part of the adventure. For first-time visitors like myself, they even offer a full guided tour, which is a great way to explore.

They also organise boat excursions to the Tobago Cays, which I would highly recommend. With its crystal-clear waters and white sand, Salt Whistle Bay felt like a beach straight out of a movie, and it was an unforgettable way to explore the neighbouring islands.

Back at the villa, a range of wellness offerings await. I indulged in a private massage in the comfort of my own suite, and also took part in a morning yoga session on the terrace with the instructor Patricia. Stretching gently while taking in the horizon was the perfect way to start the day.

One of the most memorable experiences was a sip-and-paint session with local artist Collin Peters. We painted the ocean view from the terrace and it was incredibly relaxing.

Bequia Beach Bums is a boutique located at Bequia Beach Hotel and is owned by Elinor Mortstedt. Think soft baby-pink prints, flattering silhouettes, and inclusive sizing designed to suit every body,  offering a variety of swimwear you can wear throughout your stay.

Rates at Rock Villa start from £660 per night on a bed & breakfast basis, including taxes. Exclusive use rates are available upon request. Visit bequiabeachhotel.com
