The Invictus Games are set to head to Birmingham next year, but is King Charles likely to join Prince Harry when the Duke of Sussex returns to the UK?

On this week’s edition of A Right Royal Podcast, the Sun’s political editor, Matt Wilkinson, shared how it was unlikely that the monarch would be joining his son, while Queen Camilla and Prince William certainly wouldn’t be in attendance.

“I think Invictus is a big event for Harry,” Matt explained. “I mean, I think it was between Washington DC or Birmingham, they were the two candidate cities for Invictus. And it’s not like the Olympics where you have loads of members voting.

“I think there was only one decision. It was going to Birmingham and Harry wanted to bring his whole family down here. He wants to sit there with the royal family, in the stands, but that’s very optimistic.”

He added: “Who knows what could happen next week? If you want an answer on that, looking at my crystal ball, I don’t think the King will go to Invictus next summer. I might be wrong, but William definitely won’t. Camilla definitely won’t. You might get the Defence Secretary there, the Prime Minister, but you won’t get the King.”

The Invictus Games were founded by Harry in 2014, and they serve as an international sports competition for wounded, sick and injured military personnel.

The King was at the inaugural Invictus event

The inaugural Games took place in London in 2014, and since then there have been tournaments in in Orlando in 2016, Toronto in 2017, Sydney in 2018, The Hague in 2022, Düsseldorf in 2023, and Vancouver and Whistler in February 2025.

Harry is due to return to the UK in July for a one-year-to-go event before the Games. Although Harry’s wife, Meghan Markle, has usually been at her husband’s side during the event, it’s not guaranteed that she will join him in Birmingham later this year.
