‘You can raid Mama’s closet anytime’

Practical Magic 2 is almost here! The witchy sequel premieres on Friday, September 11 and its stars are having a great time promoting it.

Sandra Bullock, 62, who stars as Sally Owens in the film, praised her co-star for recreating some of her most iconic looks. Maisie Williams, 29, who portrays Sandra’s on-screen daughter Antonia Owens, has been showing up to the red carpet in very familiar dresses.

In a post shared on Instagram on Friday, August 28, Sandra shared side-by-side photos of her looks from the ’90s and Maisie’s take on them during the Practical Magic 2 press tour. She captioned the post: “My Antonia girl, you can raid Mama’s closet anytime,” adding a special call out to Maisie’s stylist Dino Bonačić, saying: “You did a beautiful job bringing all of these looks back to life.”

The Game of Thrones star shared her thanks to Sandra, commenting: “I want to wear them allllll!!! thank you for sharing.”

At the first premiere of Practical Magic 2 in London on Wednesday, August 26, Maisie wore a custom burgundy dress from Ellie Misner that looked nearly identical to a gown Sandra wore to the 1999 premiere of Forces of Nature. While The Blind Side actress showed off a bit of her midriff in the gown, Maisie added a ruby red jeweled choker necklace.

On Thursday, August 27, Maisie wore one of Sandra’s own gowns. The young actress sported a black off-the-shoulder dress that her on-screen mom wore to the 2006 premiere of her movie Infamous, but added a broach and layered necklaces.

The actress and her co-star Joey King have chosen to lean into the ’90s for the film’s press tour.

“We’ve been taking a lot of inspiration from the late ’90s and Sandra and Nicole [Kidman]’s red carpet looks,” Maisie shared at Teen Vogue Fest in July. Joey added: “[The sequel’s costumes are] It’s heavily influenced by ’90s fashion. There are a lot of custom pieces in this movie that are just so amazing. There’s a lot of lace, a lot of ethereal, whimsical colors.”

All about Practical Magic 2

Practical Magic premiered in 1998 and quickly became a cult classic. Sandra and Nicole are reprising their roles as witches and sisters Sally and Gillian Owens in the sequel. The film is based on Alice Hoffman‘s 1995 novel of the same name.

In Practical Magic 2, the Owens sisters face the ancient family curse as their daughters come of age. And it seems like the cast really enjoyed the magical set. 

“It feels so special,” Joey shared about her friendship with Maisie to Teen Vogue in July. “We’re both big fans of the original movie, and having that kind of relationship to the movie already and getting asked to be part of the sequel 27 years later, it’s unbelievable. Getting to pick back up and see the Owens sisters, Sandy and Nicole, is like everything an OG Practical Magic fan ever wanted. Being of that universe and also carrying the stories of the of the girls is so special.”
