With her one-of-a-kind personality, Celia Cruz became a true music legend, building an impeccable career full of hits. Although the Cuban singer passed away more than 22 years ago, her legacy and memory remain alive in the hearts of many.

Marc Anthony’s life was deeply touched by the “Queen of Salsa,” which is why he wanted to dedicate a heartfelt tribute to her on what would have been her 100th birthday.

On October 22, just one day after Celia’s birthday, Marc took to social media to share touching words about the artist who inspired him and so many others. “Your legacy continues to inspire the world, and your energy is still here, more alive than ever. I love you, @celiacruz,” wrote the Puerto Rican-American singer.

Alongside his message, the “Vivir Mi Vida” singer posted a black-and-white collage featuring special moments he shared with “La Guarachera de Cuba.” In the first photo, a young Marc poses with Celia and Gloria Estefan, another of the Caribbean island’s greatest stars.

The collage also included a few more photos showing Celia and Marc beaming and hugging warmly, radiating affection and connection. While Marc didn’t share details about when the photos were taken, they appear to be from several years ago; one even shows him with long hair, a look he sported in the early 1990s.

Though Marc and Celia never recorded together in the studio, they did share the stage more than 20 years ago in a truly unforgettable performance. Both appeared on VH1 Divas Live on April 10, 2001, where they performed “Quimbara,” one of Celia Cruz’s most iconic songs.

Marc’s Deep Admiration for Celia Cruz

Years ago, in an interview later resurfaced by fans, Marc spoke openly about his admiration for Celia Cruz. “Celia began her career so many years ago. It was very, very difficult for women to get involved in music back then, and yet she endured for decades. Celia is one of those people who was born to do this, musically,” he said.

“I was told many years ago that there are people who are simply born to reach the masses, to inspire. If that doesn’t inspire you—to know that you can truly live your dream and do what you love for the rest of your life—what will? It’s pure inspiration,” Marc reflected.

In early 2003, Marc joined Gloria Estefan in presenting a special tribute produced by Telemundo in honor of Celia Cruz. The program featured live performances from numerous artists and included an appearance by Celia herself. It aired just a few months before the “Queen of Salsa” passed away on July 16 of that year due to cancer.
