James Van Der Beek’s journey on earth may have ended, but his legacy is forever. Following his passing on February 11, his family, friends, fans, and colleagues have been mourning his death, with thousands showing up to support financially. A GoFundMe was created to help support his wife, Kimberly, and their 6 children, with a goal of $1M, and it has surpassed it, nearing almost $2M.
Celebrity names have been popping up left and right as donors, one of whom is Zoe Saldaña, who was recently named the highest-grossing actor of all time. On Thursday, it was revealed that the Avatar star set up a monthly donation of $2500.

She joins a growing list like Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw, who are the top donors with $25,000. Others that have donated are Jenna Dewan, his costar Busy Philipps, Derek Hough ($1,000 ), Marla Maples through her foundation ($5,000), Julie Plec ($5,000), Lyn Lear ( $5,000 a month), Martin Blencowe ($10,000), Guy Oseary ( $10,000) and Jon M. Chu ($10,00), per Page Six. At the time of this publication, it has raised over $1.7M.
Where it’s going
With a goal of $1 million, the fundraiser revealed the immense toll his illness had taken on the family financially. “Throughout his illness, the family faced not only emotional challenges but also significant financial strain as they did everything possible to support James and provide for his care,” it reads.
According to the fundraiser, the family is now facing “an uncertain future,” explaining that the cost of James’ medical care and the length of his battle with cancer had depleted their funds.”
They are working hard to stay in their home and to ensure the children can continue their education and maintain some stability,” the page reads, highlighting the importance of support from “friends, family, and the wider community.”
Donations will go toward both immediate and long-term needs. “Your generosity will help cover essential living expenses, pay bills, and support the children’s education,” it continues, noting that every contribution, no matter the size, helps the family begin to rebuild.
Kimberly later shared a brief note on Instagram, writing simply: “With gratitude and a broken heart.”
The actor passed away peacefully on the morning of February 11, 2026. “Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning,” the family wrote. “He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace.”
The Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed he was pronounced dead at 6:44 a.m. Kimberly later shared a brief note on Instagram, writing simply: “With gratitude and a broken heart.”
