Barack Obama has moved to shut down the frenzy sparked by his viral “aliens are real” comment, offering both a formal clarification and a pointed reality check during a recent appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday night.

The former US president initially sent social media into overdrive during a rapid-fire podcast segment with Brian Tyler Cohen in February, when he was asked directly: “Are aliens real?”

“They’re real, but I haven’t seen them,” Barack replied, a comment that was quickly amplified across global media, fuelling headlines and reigniting long-running conspiracy theories about extraterrestrial life and government cover-ups.

Within hours, the remark had spiralled into a full-blown viral storm, drawing comparisons with previous statements from political figures including Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, both of whom have publicly addressed the possibility of alien life in the past.

However, Barack later issued a clarification on Instagram, insisting his answer had been taken out of context.

“I was trying to stick with the spirit of the speed round,” he explained. “Statistically, the universe is so vast that the odds are good there’s life out there. But the distances between solar systems are so great that the chances we’ve been visited by aliens is low.”

He added unequivocally: “I saw no evidence during my presidency that extraterrestrials have made contact with us. Really!”

Now, in his latest television appearance with Stephen Colbert, Obama reinforced that message with trademark humour, dismantling the idea of a secret alien cover-up in a single line.

“If that were happening,” he said, “someone would be taking selfies,” suggesting that in today’s hyper-connected world, any such extraordinary discovery would be impossible to conceal adding: “The government is terrible at hiding secrets”.

The comments come amid renewed public fascination with unidentified aerial phenomena, a topic that has gained increasing legitimacy in recent years following congressional hearings and official Pentagon reports.

In 2022, US defence officials confirmed efforts to remove the stigma around reporting so-called UAPs, encouraging military personnel to document unexplained sightings as potential national security concerns.

A subsequent government report revealed that more than 750 new sightings had been recorded between May 2023 and June 2024, including unusual incidents involving military technology. Despite this, there remains no verified evidence linking such phenomena to extraterrestrial life.

Barack’s original podcast remark also reignited speculation around Area 51, the highly classified US Air Force facility long associated with alien conspiracy theories.

But declassified documents have previously confirmed the site was primarily used for testing advanced aircraft, including the U-2 and Oxcart surveillance programs, with increased UFO sightings historically attributed to those high-altitude flights.
