Las Azules is back for a second season, this time telling the story it was always meant to tell. The Mexican series has premiered its second season on Apple TV+, continuing the story of a group of women in the ’70s who became the first women to join the police force in Mexico. Throughout the series, the women realize that their hiring is not about empowerment; instead, it’s a PR trick.

The second season is centered on one of Mexico’s most painful moments: the student massacre of 1968. In an interview with ¡HOLA! USA, showrunner Fernando Rovzar and stars Barbara Mori and Ximena Sariñana discussed their work and how important it was for them to handle this story with the respect it required.

“Since the first time I learned about the female police corps and realized it happened in the ’70s, my mind immediately went to El Halconazo,” said Rovzar, referring to the Corpus Christi massacre, a violent paramilitary action against a peaceful student protest in Mexico City that resulted in the death of 120 people.

“How can it be that the very same government that massacred students invited women into the police? And that’s where the answer comes in: it was a publicity move,” he continued.

“In the first season, I decided not to talk about that, focusing instead on violence against women. If there ever was a second season, I wanted it to be set one day after El Halconazo.”

Barbara Mori and Ximena Sariñana on the honor to play these real-life women

“I feel we’re living in a moment in humanity where it’s important to open up conversations that were forgotten and left shut away in a drawer,” said Mori.

“And because of that silence that has gone on for so many years, the consequences of that silence have grown — there continue to be missing people and deaths, and injustice continues to be present in our everyday life in Mexico City and in Mexico in general.”

They also noted how special it was to meet these women in real life and get to know their stories firsthand. “I feel there’s a lot of gratitude for everything these women did,” said Mori. “And also from their side. There was a lot of gratitude from them too, saying, well, it’s good that our story is being told, because a lot of people didn’t know.”

The second season of “Las Azules” premiered on Apple TV+ on August 12, with new episodes dropping on a weekly basis.
