Bessie Carter has opened up about the “joyful” reality of life after her breakup with Bridgerton co-star Sam Phillips. After reportedly moving in together in 2023, the pair have parted ways – a move that has led Bessie to a “life-changing” realisation.
Now, the 32-year-old – best known for playing Prudence Featherington in the hit Netflix series – reveals she is embracing a new chapter centred on independence, self-growth and career focus. Vowing to “stop dating red flags,” Bessie revealed she has “never been happier” than she is now.
“I love waking up alone, being able to stretch out, make a cacao, pad around my beautiful flat and to choose what I want to put into this day that I am lucky to get to enjoy,” she said, reports Daily Mail‘s Richard Eden.
She added: “I wanted to come back to myself. To go to therapy, to become really [explicit] good at my job, to stop dating red flags.”
Bessie, the daughter of Imelda Staunton and Jim Carter, starred opposite Sam in Bridgerton, where he played love interest, Lord Debling, in the third series.
Bessie and Sam were first linked back in November 2023, when the couple were seen together at the premiere of Wonka, alongside Bessie’s mother Imelda. They posed as a trio, with Imelda standing in the middle – suggesting Sam had been introduced to her side of the family some time before.
The following month, in December 2023, Bessie’s father, Jim, accompanied Sam to The Crown season six finale celebration event.
Although Bessie has kept much of her relationship with her famous parents out of the spotlight, in a previous interview with Tatler, she had high praise for them.
“It all felt really normal and removed the inaccessibility thing,” she explained. “They know the influence they can have, they are so kind and generous.”
