Charlotte Casiraghi has officially gone public with her relationship with French novelist Nicolas Mathieu. Just days ago, the couple were spotted enjoying a sunny afternoon at the Monte Carlo ATP tournament, where they watched Italy’s Jannik Sinner in action as he reclaimed the No. 1 spot in the world.
Their public appearance together marks a significant milestone for the daughter of Princess Caroline of Monaco. After more than two years together, Charlotte appears prepared to demonstrate that her typically low-key relationship remains strong.
The two were first photographed together in March 2024 by Paris Match, after weeks of speculation that Charlotte and her husband, Dimitri Rassam, had split following four years of marriage and one child. At the time, they were seen chatting and laughing on the terrace of the A la Ville d’Espinal restaurant in Paris, near the Saint Martin Canal, a neighborhood known for its creative, laid-back vibe.
Mathieu rose to prominence after winning the Prix Goncourt, France’s top literary prize, and has since become a major name in contemporary fiction. Despite his success, he has kept a relatively low profile. From a modest upbringing far removed from elite circles to his growing presence in the spotlight, he has clearly captured the attention of one of Europe’s most stylish figures.
In 2018, he won the Prix Goncourt for his novel And Their Children After Them, a coming-of-age story inspired by his youth in France’s Grand Est region in the 1990s. The book struck a chord with readers and was later adapted into a film released in 2024. As Point de Vue has noted, Mathieu did not grow up in media or high-society circles. He was raised near Epinal in the Vosges region, the son of an accountant and an electromechanic. It was during his school years that he first became aware of social class differences.
Love and time are recurring themes in both his writing and personal reflections. In Le Ciel ouvert, he leans into introspection, and his social media posts often feel like diary entries, touching on relationships, emotions, and the passage of time. He is also a devoted father to his 12-year-old son, Oscar. In an interview with Lou Media, he shared that reading with his son is something he truly enjoys, adding, “That was one thing I knew how to do and did well.”
Literature is clearly something he and Charlotte have in common. While they have largely maintained a low profile in their relationship, their recent appearance at the Rolex Monte Carlo Masters drew attention, with the couple seated side by side in the princely box. Charlotte has long had a passion for literature and studied philosophy at the Sorbonne in Paris. “I believe in the power of literature. The power of words changes the way we see the world,” she has said.
Mathieu came into Charlotte’s life amid ongoing rumors about her split from Rassam, with the film producer’s demanding schedule said to have played a role in their separation. Mathieu studied performing arts at the University of Metz and published his first novel, Aux animaux la guerre (Animals at War), in 2014. It was his later award-winning work, however, that brought him wider recognition. His 2022 novel Connemara is also among his best-known titles.
In his personal life, Mathieu was previously married, though the relationship ended in divorce. He has one son, Oscar, from that marriage. Charlotte is also a mother of two: Raphaël Elmaleh, from her relationship with Gad Elmaleh, and Balthazar, whom she shares with Rassam.
