Craig Melvin and Al Roker have both been granted temporary restraining orders against Andrew Truelove, the 41-year-old man who broke into the Today Show’s studio on Thursday, July 16.

Truelove has since been charged with two felonies — burglary in the third degree as a hate crime, and menacing in the third degree as a hate crime — the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office said Friday, July 17. Cash bail was set at $10,000, and a temporary order of protection was put in place for both news anchors, who were subject to racial slurs from Truelove.

Today Show incident: What happened?

The DA’s office alleged that Truelove entered the NBC studio at Rockefeller Plaza around 9am local time on July 16 by sneaking past security and following an employee who scanned in for access, per the complaint.

Witnesses report he was looking specifically for Al on the Today Show set, and then allegedly confronted 47-year-old Craig and yelled racial slurs.

“That’s what you wanted to get arrested for?” Craig reportedly responded.

NBC confirmed with HELLO! that no-one was injured.

“TODAY is cooperating fully with law enforcement as they investigate the matter. NBC and TODAY take the safety and security of our employees, talent, staff and guests extremely seriously. We are reviewing the incident and our security protocols and remain committed to providing a safe and secure environment for everyone who works at and visits our studios,” a statement read.

Today Show incident: Who is Andrew Truelove?

Truelove has not yet posted bail, and is being held in jail on Rikers Island.

His next court date is Wednesday, July 22, and he faces up to 15 years in prison.

The incident comes weeks after Truelove pleaded guilty in June 2026 to felony criminal mischief in connection with a case involving damage to multiple vehicles. He was sentenced to six months in jail, five years of probation and ordered to pay $375 in fees.

It remains unclear how much of that sentence he served before Thursday’s alleged incident.

Today Show incident: Craig and Al break silence

“Hey everyone. I’ve heard from so many of you over the last few hours,” Craig later shared on social media, assuring followers that was “doing just fine”.

In an Instagram post, shared in the early hours of Friday, July 17, Al also sent a “really heartfelt thank you to all who reached out over the last 24 hours to check in on my brother, @craigmelvinnbc”.

“We are both okay. It’s moments like these that serve to pull us together,” the 71-year-old weather reporter continued. “Like Craig said, ‘You come after one of us, you come after all of us.’ We’ll talk about it this morning on @todayshow.”

Craig then broke his on-air silence about the incident on July 17, telling viewers: “You may have heard that unfortunately an intruder made his way into an unauthorized area here at Studio 1A. Thankfully he was apprehended quickly, he was placed under arrest, we are cooperating fully with NYPD as they investigate the matter and we are just very happy that everyone is safe.”

“We want to make sure that you’re safe,” said co-anchor Laura Jarrett, who was sitting in for Savannah Guthrie.

“Safe and sound,” Melvin replied.
