Dave Baustista found fame as one of the most popular wrestlers of the 2000s, but has become a global superstar after turning to acting, appearing in six Marvel movies – so far.

But the actor, who became known for his imposing stature and large physique, has made a huge transformation, appearing at San Diego Comic Con on Thursday, July 23, 2026 looking leaner than usual – and with an additional salt and pepper beard.

The look was a stark reminder of the 57-year-old’s goal to appear more natural while standing next to co-stars, as well as garner different types of roles, after admitting his fear that his presence was “distracting” on screen.

Dave joined Eric Nam and others for a panel supporting Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, with Dave rocking slim-fitted grey chinos with a fitted white tee and a baseball cap,  highlighting his new appearance.

Big break

After small parts in TV shows, his big break came in 2014 when he was cast as Drax the Destroyer in the 2014 Marvel Studios film Guardians of the Galaxy. A huge critical and commercial success, Dave’s towering presence lent itself to comedy bits, but the heart he imbued into Drax ensured he was one of the standouts for other reasons as well.

Dave went on to appear as the villain in the James Bond movie Spectre, and the 2016 film Kickboxer: Vengeance, as well as action roles in films such as Blade Runner 2049, Dune, and Army of the Dead.

75lb weight loss

In 2013, the 6′ 4 actor gained weight for the horror movie Knock On The Cabin by eating pancakes and French fries, but later revealed he was “uncomfortably big” and “it took forever to shed it out.”

He lost 75lbs, and told content creator Chris Van Vliet that the “more I trimmed down, the better I looked on camera and the better I looked next to other actors”.

“I’m still a large human being. At 6’4 and 240 pounds next to your typical actor, I look like a gorilla, and it’s distracting,” he said. “I’ll probably lose a few more pounds. I’m just killing myself to be this trim. I’m training hard.”

Denis Villeneuve’s advice

Dave also shared that becoming self-conscious about his size has begun to impact his acting, noting that during the filming of Dune, director Denis Villeneuve reminded him he was “a strong actor” and to stop “holding back.”

“I was holding back because I was self-conscious [and] I was. I was very unsure of myself. And he came to me. He said, ‘I feel like you’re holding back. You’re a very strong actor, my friend. Just follow your instincts.’ And so I started belting it out, and I started finding this character,” he said.

“[Denis] not only loved it so much, but he was so supportive of my performance that he wanted to capture other people’s reactions to my performance. And so when you’re getting that kind of support, that was an experience I’ve never had before or since, with a director of that caliber. So it means everything. It’s validation.”

Dave’s fitness plan

The actor now incorporates cardio into his fitness routine, focusing on cycling, boxing, and strength training.

His diet remains nutrient-rich, plant-forward, with a focus on protein such as eggs and fish. However, in 2021, he did share that he hoped to pivot to a vegan diet.
