Future Queen Ingrid Alexandra begins a new chapter as an exchange student in Oslo

Princess Ingrid Alexandra has officially begun a new chapter in her journey to the Norwegian throne. This time, not at a royal engagement but inside a university classroom.

The Norwegian Royal House shared new photographs marking the 22-year-old’s first day as an exchange student at the University of Oslo, where she will spend the autumn semester while continuing the bachelor’s degree she began at the University of Sydney in 2025. 

The future queen was welcomed by university leaders and joined fellow students at the Faculty of Social Sciences, where she will study comparative politics and conflict resolution as part of her international relations and political economy program. According to the palace, she will attend classes as an ordinary student during the semester. 

The move comes just weeks after Ingrid Alexandra returned to Norway from Australia to be closer to her family while her mother, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, recovers from a lung transplant. Palace officials previously confirmed that the exchange semester allows the princess to continue her education without interrupting her degree at the University of Sydney.

The newly released images reflected that balance between royal duty and everyday life. Dressed casually in a gray jacket, white T-shirt, dark jeans, and sneakers, Ingrid Alexandra posed with fellow students and university officials rather than in a formal royal setting, underscoring the palace’s long-standing effort to give her as normal a life as possible while preparing for her future role. 

Although she is second in line to Norway’s throne after her father, Crown Prince Haakon, the princess is expected to keep a relatively low public profile while focusing on her studies, taking on royal engagements only when needed. The approach reflects a broader trend among Europe’s younger royals, many of whom are balancing higher education with their future responsibilities.

Spain’s Princess Leonor is currently completing her military training after graduating from the UWC Atlantic College in Wales, a path designed to prepare her for her future role as commander-in-chief of Spain’s armed forces. 

Meanwhile, Belgium’s Princess Elisabeth has pursued higher education at Oxford University and later Harvard, while the Netherlands’ Princess Catharina-Amalia enrolled at the University of Amsterdam before adjusting her living arrangements because of security concerns.

Like her royal peers, Ingrid Alexandra’s education has combined international experience with time at home. After beginning her bachelor’s degree in political economy and social sciences at the University of Sydney, she is now spending the autumn semester at the University of Oslo as an exchange student, studying comparative politics and conflict resolution.

The decision highlights how Europe’s future queens are increasingly gaining experience beyond palace walls, building academic credentials and everyday life experiences before eventually stepping into their constitutional roles.
