Hilary Duff is opening up about the deeply personal inspiration behind her new song, “We Don’t Talk.”
During an appearance on CBS Mornings on Friday, Feb. 20, the singer and actress revealed that the track from her latest album, luck…or something, reflects a difficult period in her relationship with her sister, Haylie Duff.
“It’s definitely about my sister and just absolutely the most lonely part of my existence. It’s not having my sister in my life at the moment, and I really struggled with thinking about including that on the record,” Hilary, 38, shared with host Anthony Mason.
The “Weather for Tennis” singer explained that she’s witnessed many people who, like her, are living without their “other half,” which influenced her decision to be open about her experience.
Visibly emotional, Hilary said she ultimately chose to include the song because it represents her personal reality.
“So many people are having this experience [of estrangement], and for me, making a record was just going to be all about connection. I was never going to take outside songs from people…what would the point be, right, if it wasn’t me and it wasn’t my my life?” she said.
She also spoke about how challenging it has been to grow up in the public eye, with much of her life on display since childhood.
“I didn’t necessarily choose that part, but it’s my reality, and so it was honestly like healing to say,” the “Roommates” performer explained.
Hilary added that constant online commentary can make things even more difficult.
“It’s hard to to watch your life unfold on the internet sometimes with talking heads on TikTok speculating this, that, and the other,” she said.
“Sometimes they’re wrong and sometimes they’re right,” she continued.
Mason then asked whether the former Lizzie McGuire star hoped her sister would listen to, “We Don’t Talk.”
“I don’t think that that would help,” Hilary responded. “I think I have to just exist as a person on my own and do what I want to do.”
She went on to reflect on her journey toward prioritizing her own well-being.
“I hope that for everyone that is where I’m sitting, you have to do what you want to do and you have to do what feels good for you. It’s taken me a lot of time to get there and to live that way and to not care what the the noise is going to be around it and just be me,” she said.
Hilary also admitted she isn’t sure whether Haylie has heard the song yet.
“I don’t know how she’ll react to it,” she shared. “But it is a really personal part of my life that doesn’t get to stay personal, so I might as well say how it is for me as an experience.”
She closed by emphasizing that her intentions are not negative, but honest.
“That’s all I’m trying to do. I’m not trying to say anything bad. It’s literally just my experience, and that’s really all I feel like sharing.”
