As a video editor, my world is usually defined by sitting in a dark room all day and meeting relentless deadlines. If anyone was a prime candidate for a solar recharge, it was me. So, when Beachcomber called, I traded my monitors for Mauritius, an island that feels less like a masterclass in relaxation.
My journey began at the Dinarobin Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa, a property that oozes tropical elegance. Nestled on the island’s most spectacular shoreline, the resort is a sanctuary of thatched-roof suites arranged in intimate crescents.
Waking up to the silhouette of the UNESCO World Heritage Le Morne Brabant mountain is a spiritual experience in itself. Traveling by carts around the resort to their spas, a true haven of holistic well-being in perfect harmony with nature, or a choice of eight restaurants on the peninsula, with four restaurants at Paradis Beachcomber, an adjacent same-category resort.
This was followed by Royal Palm Beachcomber Luxury, a place that has hosted royalty and A-listers alike. From the moment you step into the lobby, the air is scented with frangipani and the service is nothing short of telepathic. My sea-facing suite felt like a private sanctuary, where the sound of the Indian Ocean lapping at the shore provided a permanent, soothing soundtrack.
Dining with the stars
For the foodies among us, Mauritius is having a major moment. I was lucky enough to experience the resort’s partnership with world-renowned chefs. At La Goélette, the flagship restaurant, the menu is a masterclass in “Islands-meets-Paris” gastronomy.
Think locally caught lobster paired with delicate French techniques, and the legendary Chef Cyril Lignac’s Ischia restaurant, which brings a touch of Mediterranean flair to the Grand Baie coastline. It isn’t just dinner; it’s an event. Every plate is a work of art, deserving of every one of its Michelin accolades.
First-class service complements the restaurant’s unique location, treating guests to spectacular views of the ocean by day and night.
Dancing with dolphins
Of course, you can’t fly halfway across the world and stay on your sun lounger the whole time – though that was my plan! The highlight of my trip was an early morning boat excursion to Tamarin Bay.
As the sun began to turn the water into liquid gold, we found ourselves surrounded by pods of wild spinner dolphins. Slipping into the crystal-clear water to watch these majestic creatures glide beneath us was a “pinch-me” moment that no camera could ever quite capture. It was ethical, exhilarating, and utterly life-affirming. Even though I can’t swim, I knew I had to get into the sea and have this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The art of the spa
After the adrenaline of the ocean, it was time for relaxation. The Beachcomber Spa is a temple of tranquility. I opted for the Mauritian Coconut Ritual, a nourishing treatment using locally sourced oils that left my skin glowing and my mind blissfully blank. Whether you’re tucked away in a treatment cabin at Dinarobin or enjoying the sleek, Zen-like atmosphere at Grand Baie, the expertise of the therapists is world-class.
Mauritius is about more than just white sand – it’s about the soul of the island, the depth of its flavors, and the warmth of its people. If you’re looking for a getaway that nourishes the body and the spirit in equal measure, look no further.
