During the 98th Academy Awards there was a rare tie, something that has only occurred six other times in the ceremony’s history.

While Kumail Nanjiani presented the award for Best Live Action Short Film, he shared something surprising with the audience.

He revealed: “It’s a tie. I’m not joking, it’s actually a tie.” Kumail took a deep breath and continued: “Everyone calm down, we’re gonna get through this. Focus up, calm down, remain calm. I’m gonna name one winner, they’ll come up, accept their award, and then I’ll come back and name another winner.”

This year’s Oscars had a tie

The first group of winners to take the stage was for The Singers and its producers Sam A. Davis and Jack Piatt joked: “We [didn’t] know that was a thing, but we’re happy to be up here.”

Kumail then returned to the stage to announce the second group of winners and quipped: “Ironic that the short film Oscar is gonna take twice as long.” The next award went to Two People Exchanging Saliva.

Previous ties

The most recent time a tie occurred was in 2013, when Zero Dark Thirty and Skyfall both won in the category for Best Sound Editing.

In 1995, Franz Kafka’s It’s a Wonderful Life and Trevor both won for Best Live Action Short Film.

Artie Shaw: Time Is All You’ve Got and Down and Out in America tied in the category for Best Documentary Feature in 1987.

In 1968, Barbra Streisand and Katharine Hepburn both won the Oscar for Best Actress.

A Chance to Live and So Much for So Little tied in 1950 in the category of Best Documentary Short.

The first time a tie ever occurred at the Oscars was in 1932. That year, Wallace Beery and Fredric March shared the award for Best Actor.

The history of the Oscars

The Oscars first aired in 1929 and featured 12 categories at the time. The first ceremony took place in the Blossom Room at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel and the setting was intimate with only 270 guests in attendance.

At the time, the winners were announced three months in advance, and the ceremony was simply a celebratory party.

During the second-ever Oscars, the winners began to be announced during the ceremony instead of beforehand.

The 12 categories included Best Picture, Best Director: Drama, Best Director: Comedy, Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Picture: Unique and Artistic Production, Best Original Story, Best Adaptation, Best Cinematography, Best Art Director, Best Engineering Effects, and Best Writing: Title Cards.

The Academy Awards will reach their 100th anniversary in just two years, and during that whole time, ties have only occurred seven times in total, which truly makes them rare and memorable for winners and viewers alike.
