More than three decades after Princess Diana stepped out in one of the most unforgettable dresses in royal fashion history, her famous black “Revenge Dress” is commanding attention once again.
The black silk crepe evening dress, designed by Greek designer Christina Stambolian and worn by Diana on June 29, 1994, is being displayed at Sotheby’s in London ahead of a major auction in New York on December 9, 2026. Sotheby’s has placed an estimate of $150,000 to $300,000 on the dress.
The gown went on public display in London on September 18 and will remain there through September 24 before embarking on an international tour. Stops in Hong Kong and Geneva will follow, with the dress ultimately arriving in New York ahead of the December sale.
It is a rare chance to see the original garment behind a fashion moment that continues to be referenced more than 30 years later.
Why Princess Diana’s Revenge Dress became so famous
Diana wore the Christina Stambolian dress to a Vanity Fair fundraising dinner at the Serpentine Gallery in London on June 29, 1994. The timing turned what could have been simply a glamorous evening look into a defining moment in royal and fashion history.

Diana knew the televised revelation was coming. Rather than cancel her scheduled appearance, she attended the Serpentine event in the striking black dress.

The original gown is more detailed than its famous photographs might suggest. According to Sotheby’s official lot description, Stambolian created the dress in black silk crepe, with a criss-cross pleated bodice and an off-the-shoulder neckline. The fitted chiffon skirt is diagonally draped and flows into a side-swept train.
The silhouette was notably daring compared with many of the more conservative royal looks Diana had worn earlier in her public life.

Diana reportedly owned the dress for years before wearing it
The dress did not begin as a last-minute purchase for the Serpentine event. Diana had reportedly owned the Stambolian design for approximately three years but had previously considered it too daring to wear publicly. For the June 1994 event, she had initially planned to wear a Valentino gown before changing her outfit.

Princess Diana’s Revenge Dress was last sold in 1997
The December auction will mark the dress’s first appearance on the auction market in nearly three decades.
Its provenance can be traced directly to Christie’s New York on June 25, 1997, when it appeared as Lot 2 in the sale Dresses from the Collection of Diana, Princess of Wales. Sotheby’s confirms that provenance in its current listing.
© Anwar HusseinThe 1997 auction was organized by Diana to raise money for cancer and AIDS charities. She sold 79 dresses from her wardrobe, including the Stambolian gown.
Briege and Graeme Mackenzie purchased the Revenge Dress for £39,098. The couple subsequently used the garment to support charitable fundraising in Scotland. The same family is now consigning it for the upcoming Sotheby’s sale.
The December lot will also include a copy of the original 1997 Christie’s auction catalogue signed by both Diana and Christina Stambolian. Part of the proceeds from the upcoming sale is expected to benefit NHS Lothian Charity on behalf of the Royal Edinburgh Hospital.
