Netflix’s latest true crime drama, Should I Marry A Murderer?, tells the story of young forensic pathologist Caroline Muirhead, who quickly fell in love with her Tinder date, Sandy McKellar.
But what started out as a fairytale romance soon turned into a nightmare after Sandy admitted to a brutal killing, forcing Caroline into an impossible position. Does she keep the murder a secret or go to the police?
The three-part documentary explores the “moral dilemma at the heart of this story,” according to director Josh Allott, featuring exclusive interviews with Caroline, her friends and family, and lawyers and investigators on the case.
But what did Alexander McKellar do and where is he now? Keep reading to find out more…
What did Alexander McKellar do?
On 29 September 2017, Alexander McKellar was driving under the influence of alcohol when he struck and killed 63-year-old charity cyclist Tony Parsons in Argyll and Bute, Scotland.
Tony was killed during a 100-mile bike ride for a prostate cancer charity, having successfully been treated for the illness.
Alexander and his twin brother, Robert, buried the body on their 28,000-acre farm, where it lay undiscovered for three years.
Did Alexander McKellar get caught?
After just a few months of dating, Alexander proposed to Caroline, prompting her to ask him if there was anything in his past that might affect their future together.
After Alexander shared his crime with Caroline, she spent months trying to gather enough evidence to put him away, according to the Netflix documentary.
She eventually led the police to the grave using a Red Bull can she left at the site during a visit with Alexander.
“When I came forward in December 2020, I trusted that the system would keep me safe when I was at my most vulnerable, but that wasn’t my experience,” Caroline told Netflix. “I hope, by speaking out and sharing what happened to me, we can start an honest conversation about greater protection for victims and witnesses — and why a far deeper understanding of mental health within the police and court system is so desperately needed.”
Where is Alexander McKellar now?
In 2023, Alexander pleaded guilty to culpable homicide and was sentenced to 12 years in prison. His brother, Robert was sentenced to five years and three months for obstruction of justice. Both brothers are currently in prison in Scotland.
Should I Marry A Murderer? is available to stream on Netflix now.
