Inside the home in Portugal where she welcomed her third child

Princess Eugenie is rewriting the rules she’s followed strictly throughout her life. The clearest proof arrived this week, in a Lisbon delivery room rather than in London. On Monday, Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank welcomed a daughter, becoming the fifteenth great-grandchild of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank married at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor in 2018 after the late Queen formally approved the marriage.

Her daughter’s birth in Portugal is a striking break with tradition: both of the couple’s sons, August and Ernest, were born in London’s Portland Hospital, the same private maternity unit where Eugenie herself was born.

Eugenie holds the rare distinction of having been a princess from birth, a status that granddaughters of a sovereign are automatically entitled to under King George V’s 1917 Letters Patent. As one of the late Queen’s granddaughters who worked the hardest to preserve her institutional role within the Firm, her decision to give birth abroad reads as something bigger than a lifestyle choice. It looks like a woman stepping back from a family saga that has consumed the House of York.

Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice are Andrew’s only children

Her father, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, was stripped of his Duke of York title and the “prince” style in October 2025 over his ties to Jeffrey Epstein, then arrested in February, on the morning of his 66th birthday, on suspicion of misconduct in public office. Her mother, Sarah Ferguson, lost her title of Duchess of York in the same reckoning. Both were ordered out of Royal Lodge, the 30-room Windsor estate the couple had lived in for the past two decades.

Against that backdrop, Eugenie has landed somewhere that looks like a fresh start.

A private world on the Alentejo coast

Eugenie, Jack, and their children moved to Portugal’s Alentejo coast two years ago, when it was rumored that Jack was growing his business there. The decision to have their third child in Lisbon suggests the scale has now tipped decisively toward Portugal. Home is CostaTerra Golf & Ocean Club, a private residential development on the Comporta coast.

Jack’s own path there wound through the hospitality world. He left university without finishing his degree, climbed the ranks at well-regarded clubs and restaurants, and eventually became a brand ambassador for Casamigos while also running his own wine business. That career of courting high-profile clients led, in 2022, to a role with Discovery Land Company, where he now works in marketing, sales, and promotion for the CostaTerra project — the professional leap that gave the couple both purpose and distance from the drama back home.

Eugenie and Harry have had a close friendship for years

The development has spent years trailed by rumors linking it to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The Sussexes have confirmed ties to the area, vacationing there this summer, but there is no confirmation they’ve bought property to establish a Portuguese base.

The speculation isn’t baseless: Eugenie is the Windsor closest to the Sussexes. She was the first family member to meet Meghan when she began dating Harry, and she remains the only one known to have traveled to the United States to visit them.

‘No one cares’

Beyond the idyllic setting, what Eugenie has gained in Portugal is something Britain could never give her: anonymity. It isn’t absolute — news of her daughter’s birth leaked to the Portuguese press before any official confirmation — but the contrast with life in the UK is enormous, especially after a year in which her parents were on the cover of the country’s major tabloids.

Eugenie put the appeal of her new life plainly on the podcast “Table Manners” with Jessie and Lennie Ware: “This is why Portugal is the dream because I can go to the supermarket in my exercise gear and my hair piled on my head and not mind. No one cares.”

It’s a small sentence that explains a very large decision — and why, for now, Eugenie has no intention of leaving.
