Jennifer Lopez is setting the record straight about a little-known chapter of her life before becoming a global superstar. During a recent interview, the singer, actress, and entrepreneur revealed that long before she was performing on stage and starring in blockbuster films, she worked in an office preparing taxes.
“In high school I worked for a law office and I did taxes and I was very good at it,” Lopez shared when asked whether she had ever worked in an office environment in the past. The revelation quickly sparked debate online, with some social media users questioning whether the story was true. But an unexpected voice soon emerged to back up Lopez’s account.
Musician and songwriter Spritely took to social media to share what she called her “party trick” and reveal her family’s connection to the star. “I can attest that is true because that law office she is talking about is my dad’s,” Spritely said in a video.
According to the artist, the office was a small family-run practice founded by her father, not a large corporate firm. “This was not some big firm, this was some practice he started,” she explained. “My mom was pregnant with one of my older sisters and at that point, my dad needed to hire someone, so he held interviews. My mom was there. They said Jennifer was extremely intelligent. She stood apart from the rest of the applicants by a long shot.”
Spritely went on to describe Lopez as a standout employee who made a lasting impression on her family. “She was really nice and really good at her job,” she recalled. “But she was taking dancing lessons at the time. She went to my sister’s christening, and eventually it was time for her to go and do what J.Lo did.” The Bronx native later pursued dance full-time before launching the career that would make her a household name.
Spritely also shared a humorous family anecdote involving her father and Lopez’s rise to fame.
According to the musician, her father was even interviewed for VH1’s True Hollywood Story in the early 2000s because of his connection to the future superstar. “Growing up, me being a singer, he always joked, ‘I got one call, I got just one favor to ask J.Lo when you are ready.'”
She added with a laugh, “I think that favor has expired by a couple of decades at this point.” Still, she couldn’t resist sending a message to Lopez. “But if this makes it to J.Lo, hi, the family says hi.”
Spritely, who creates pop-rock music and sings for television projects, was pleasantly surprised when Lopez actually saw the video. The superstar responded in the comments with a short but enthusiastic message. “How crazy,” Lopez wrote, adding clapping emojis.
For those wondering whether the multi-hyphenate entertainer really spent her teenage years working in a tax office, her former boss’s daughter says the answer is a definitive yes.
Before the chart-topping albums, sold-out tours, and Hollywood success, Jennifer Lopez was apparently just a talented teenager balancing tax returns and dance classes.
