Jodie Foster beamed with pride as her eldest son, Charlie Bernard, joined her on the red carpet for Mariska Hargitay’s Broadway debut in Every Brilliant Thing on Tuesday. The 63-year-old was all smiles beside Charlie, who stood more than a foot taller than his petite mother.
Jodie looked incredible in an ivory silk shirt, black trousers and black sandals, while her 27-year-old son was dapper in a black button-up shirt, a gray blazer and dark-wash blue jeans.
The Oscar-winning actress welcomed Charlie with her former partner, Cydney Bernard, in 1998, followed by their son Christopher “Kit” Bernard in 2001. The couple split in 2008, and Jodie went on to marry Alexandra Hedison in 2014.
Charlie is following in his mother’s footsteps with his dreams of being an actor, and Jodie has been cheering him on every step of the way. “They’re at that age where they’re starting their careers, and they’re pretty insecure about what’s gonna happen,” she told People.
“But every time they get a joy, like I got an ‘A’ or I got this job or I got an audition, my heart just fills up 14 times because I have this memory of a beautiful career that’s built on doing meaningful work, and I know that’s the recipe for happiness. So I’m just thrilled for them, for the future.”
Jodie previously told More magazine that Charlie showed a penchant for acting from a young age.
“[He’ll say] ‘I want to be in movies. Why can’t you get me a job?’ Then I say, ‘You have to earn that. If you want to be an actor, you can start by doing a little theater.’ Then he says, ‘I’m not interested in that. I just want to be famous and see my face,'” she recalled.
Charlie starred in the 2025 short Elegance, and is working hard on pursuing an acting career. Growing up with a famous mother couldn’t have been easy, yet for many years, Charlie and Kit were blissfully unaware of her star power.
“I guess I just didn’t want them to know me that way,” she explained on The View. “I wanted them to know me as their mom and the person who went away to work and stuff. I just didn’t want them to be confused about what I did for a living.”
“I brought [Charlie] to set one day, and I bought him a little plastic tool belt and stuff,” she continued. “And I was like, ‘Yeah, and this is this set and this set and this set.’ And for a really long time, he thought I was a construction worker.”
Despite the boys figuring out their mom’s secret, Jodie added that they aren’t interested in watching her films. “I think they’re going to catch True Detective, cause they’re really into that. And yeah, there’s a few films that I would never show them because I would be worried about being teased.”
