King Frederik and Queen Mary of Denmark are closing out the summer with what Danish media are already calling the wedding of the season. This Saturday, August 22, the royal couple will take their seats among the guests at Egeskov Castle for the marriage of Gregers Carl Preben Ahlefeldt-Laurvig-Bille to his fiancée, Cecilie Juhl — a ceremony that carries far more personal weight for the king than any ordinary society wedding.
Gregers is the eldest son of Count Michael Ahlefeldt-Laurvig-Bille, and Frederik has been his godfather since childhood. That bond is what will put the King and Queen inside the church rather than sending their regards from a distance, as the royal couple settles back into official duties after their summer break.
The vows themselves will be exchanged at Kværndrup Church, a parish currently without a permanent priest. Stepping in to officiate is Bishop Mads Davidsen of the Diocese of Funen, and his presence turns the day into something of a reunion.
© Martin Sylvest AndersenFrederik, then still crown prince, attended Davidsen’s episcopal ordination at Odense Cathedral in April 2023, and the two crossed paths again in August 2024, when Davidsen welcomed the newly crowned king and queen ashore at Assens during their first royal summer tour aboard the royal yacht Dannebrog. Saturday will mark their third meeting, this time with Davidsen presiding over a wedding rather than an official welcome.
After the ceremony, the celebration moves to Egeskov Castle itself, widely regarded as Europe’s best-preserved Renaissance moated castle, its towers, drawbridge and gardens spread dramatically across the water on which it was built back in 1554. The estate has stayed in the Ahlefeldt-Laurvig-Bille family since 1882, and Count Michael has owned it since 1994. For the wedding weekend, the castle itself will close its doors, though its parks and exhibitions stay open to visitors.

In 2019, Egeskov was the setting for the wedding of Princess Alexandra, niece of Queen Margrethe, to Count Michael — Gregers’s father. It was an intimate affair with roughly 33 guests, including Princess Märtha Louise of Norway and her partner, Durek Verrett. That marriage folded Count Michael fully into the social orbit of both the Danish and Greek royal families, and Egeskov has remained a fixture on the royal calendar ever since.
Now the castle opens its gates again, this time for the next generation. With Frederik and Mary expected to dress the part for one of the most closely watched royal outings of the year, and with nobility from Denmark and beyond making the trip to Funen, Saturday’s wedding is shaping up to be as much a society event as it is a family one. It’ll be an afternoon built around love, tradition, and a reunion years in the making, as Gregers and Cecilie say their “I do.”
