King Frederik takes on an unexpected royal mission that leads to outer space

King Frederik X traded the palace for a glimpse into the future on Tuesday as he opened the Space for Inspiration conference in Copenhagen.

The Danish monarch arrived at the Bella Center on September 1 to officially launch the two-day gathering, which brings together companies, scientists, entrepreneurs, investors and space agencies from across Europe and beyond.

Organized by the European Space Agency in partnership with Denmark’s Ministry of Higher Education and Science, the conference explores how research conducted in microgravity, orbit and even on the Moon could create new possibilities for industries on Earth.

Looking polished in a gray suit, light blue shirt and patterned burgundy tie, Frederik appeared in high spirits as he greeted attendees and toured the conference.

Photos released by the Danish Royal House showed the King speaking with participants, examining exhibits and learning about some of the technology being developed within Denmark’s growing space sector.

During the visit, Frederik stopped at the European Space Agency’s stand and met representatives from two Danish startups, Danish Graphene and Erletek. Their inclusion placed homegrown innovation at the center of an event designed to connect scientific research with real-world commercial opportunities.

From health care to lunar construction:

This year’s conference is centered on the theme “Scaling Research and Production in Space.” Its program focuses on four key areas: health and life sciences, advanced materials and manufacturing in space, agri-food innovation and lunar construction.

Some of the research could eventually influence the development of medicines, sustainable food systems and new building materials. Other discussions look even further ahead, examining how resources found on the Moon could be used to create infrastructure for future missions.

The conference is expected to welcome more than 500 participants during its two-day run, according to the European Space Agency. Among those attending is Danish astronaut Andreas Mogensen, who served as a pilot aboard the International Space Station during his most recent mission.

For Frederik, the engagement offered a distinctly modern addition to the royal calendar while highlighting Denmark’s increasing role in Europe’s commercial space industry.

A royal interest in science and exploration:

Although the engagement took him figuratively from Denmark to outer space, the subject was not entirely unfamiliar to the King. Frederik has frequently supported Danish innovation, scientific research and initiatives focused on the future of the country.

The outing also reflected the broader direction of his reign. Since succeeding his mother, Queen Margrethe, Frederik has combined royal tradition with engagements concerning technology, sustainability and international cooperation.

By opening the conference, the monarch helped draw attention to an industry whose discoveries may begin far beyond Earth but ultimately reshape everyday life back home.
