King Haakon VIII and Queen Mette-Marit are preparing for a historic night at Oslo’s Royal Palace as they welcome European royalty for the first time as Norway’s new King and Queen. The private dinner comes on the eve of King Harald V’s state funeral, bringing together members of some of Europe’s most prominent royal families at a defining moment for the Norwegian monarchy.
Since King Harald’s death on August 28, Oslo has become the center of royal attention. On Wednesday, the late monarch will be given a final farewell with full honors at a historic state funeral at Oslo Cathedral, scheduled to begin around noon.
Royal families from across Europe and beyond, along with heads of state and other dignitaries, are expected to attend the service and pay their final respects. For Haakon and Mette-Marit, however, the occasion carries another profound significance. As Norway mourns King Harald, the couple are taking their first steps as the country’s new monarchs.
On the eve of the funeral, that transition will take place in a more intimate setting, as the King and Queen host their royal counterparts at a private dinner inside the Royal Palace.

A Private Dinner Kept Off the Official Royal Schedule
The dinner was not listed on the guests’ official schedules and did not appear in the program released by the Norwegian Royal House, adding an unusual degree of privacy to an otherwise closely watched series of events.

King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain, accompanied by Queen Sofía, stopped at the hotel before preparing for the evening at the Royal Palace.
Prince Nikolaos and Princess Alexia of Greece have also been seen arriving at the hotel, along with the Grand Duke of Luxembourg. Japan’s Crown Prince Akishino and Crown Princess Kiko are among the other senior royals who have traveled to Oslo.
